When you've finished driving around and you know the engine is going to be cold when you next start it (in the morning etc) you de-select veg by flipping the switch up. The control unit will switch from veg to diesel and wait 90 seconds for the diesel to get through the system then bleep. If you switch off without flushing it will complain at you to let you know you havent flushed the veg out.

Purging the system is slightly different. You switch the switch 5 times and it goes into purge mode. You only do this after the initial set up or when you know you've blown loads of air into the fuel system.

It does take a few miles to warm up and 'allow' you to switch the veg on but I'm still getting 2:1 ratio of veg to diesel.

cheers - did you notice a difference when driving using heated "fuel" rather than just ambient straight from the tank ?

and approx how long does it take to heat up enough to switch over ?

it depends on how cold the day is. In summer its about 3 miles. i'd say I'm traveling further before it kicks in now than last month.

Once its warm it runs much better, but that's the nature of the diesel engine int it?

I have one just after the veg comes out of the veg tank. To be honest, the veg oil from supermarkets seems to be super clean and CharlesY thinks they are unnecessary. Use the land rovers own system and filters seemed to be the general opinion.

Just got my new fuel and air filters delivered from Paddocks. Gonna get out there in a bit and see what difference it makes (if any). god knows when they were last changed.

Have you got a seperate pump just for the veg oil ? - or is your switchover valve installed before the orignal pump? - did you insulate the fuel pipe as it comes out of your heater?

Nearly all of the parts which i ordered to do my conversion have arrived, apart from the tank and i'm just plotting how i'll do the plumping.

After posting in the 'strange' therad originally started by Pos. CharlseY recomended that the diesel/veg switchover point should be before the original land rover fuel lift pump. That way the fuel gets pushed through the system (very important)

DIESEL
!
OR.........LIFT PUMP.....FILTER......INJECTOR PUMP + (return back to tank)
!
VEG

I've lagged every fuel line (send and return) to keep the heat in. Pipe lagging stuff, I found some space age bubble wrap kind of lagging (less bulky) which works well.

Thats the way mines set up (Im sure there will be others who might think of another way). It's working and I've not had any problems up to now, its been in about three months.

Have fun

You need to return the injector bleed off lines and the injection pump fuel return line.

I eventually settled with leaving the injector bleed off lines returning to the top of the filter assembly. The injection pump fuel return line goes back to the veg tank. The filter top fuel return out line joins the injection pump return line via a T shaped join so that too returns to the veg tank.

I originally had everythin going back to the diesel tank but all that does is fill the diesel tank up with veg when you run on veg.

The return lines do return a lot of fuel. All my returns go to the veg tank. Last week I drove back from the lakes on diesel and filled the veg tank to the brim with diesel that was returned.

Thanks Dirty Hands;) This will be me first time, so ah'll start with the 50/50 in the same tank. Dread tae think what crud is lying in me fuel tank just now, so that's why ah was wondering.
Cheers again;) :D

cheers - thats what i was hoping youd say - is the fuel return an existing route or did you put that in yourself? - not that it'd really matter if some fuel got returned to the wrong tank - i must have a look see how the fueling works as standard

VEG VEGETABLE SUNFLOWER OIL CONVERTED DIESEL ROVER!! - eBay Rover MG, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 03-Oct-07 09:51:00 BST)

"This car currently has no tax or MOT, but I will provide a written guarantee that it will go through its MOT without problem."

it always makes me laugh when people say "its got no mot but it will fly through one fine". why not spend £50 putting it through and then get at least an extra £200 for the caR??!

I've ordered a 6 way valve (2x 3 port) to hopefully avoid fuel going to the wrong tank.

i suspect it's one of the students whos selling it so their logic would be not to spend the extra £50 as thats 50 less beer tokens in his pocket - whereas an older wiser bloke might say put on mot on it and it'll be worth more - wonder what it runs like on used engine oil

I'm currently running mine on 70% svo, 30% diesel. It's a 19J engine. No noticeable difference against 100% diesel though might cut back to 50/50 when the weather gets colder.

Did anyone have any problems when they first started using svo? My biggest worry is, we're going up north a bit next week and it's more than 250 miles one way. My filter was changed last year around this time, so would I get away with using 50/50 just now, or would it be best to wait 'til I get back and try it? I think the fuel tank is original, so that makes it 16 years old and have no idea of what it's condition is. I'm probably being paranoid, but better safe than sorry;) :D

Mine hadn't been changed for ages before I started using veg oil. I did about 1200 miles before I found time to do it without any problems.

changeg mine yesterday n took it for a drive, feels ok. can I restate that I know f**k all about land rovers and by no streach of the imagination am I an expert on veg power. I got the info from threads on this site and the advice offered by the good people of the site. My mate has an older 2 tank set up which I used as an exapmple when I did mine.

good luck

Cheers hughesy, that's put my mind to rest:D Will probably give it try tomorrow and see how it goes and i'll take a new filter with me on my travels(just incase)
Cheers again:D

dare i admit this - i didnt change the filter in my old TD untill i'd done at least 8K using veg oil, and most of those where at a high veg oil %/tank

and to be honest i didnt change it untill i'd read on here that it's a good idea to do so - also didnt notice any difference after changing it either :)
