won't go into gear - not mc or sc

Clutch was juddering for a few days and slowly it got harder and harder to get into gear. Now the only way to get it into gear is to turn engine off, put into gear, then start engine, clutch is dragging and car pulls forward. have checked the movent of the slave cylinder and it is moving just over half an inch, which looks teh same as my other freelander. I am assuming it is the clutch release plate not moving far enough back. Just wondered if anyone else had the same problem, and if what they had to have replaced.

Sounds like clutch plate is slipping. Does the pedal feel the same?

If you are in any doubt you can switch the hydraulics, assuming they are the same, its a sealed system. Although my money is on your clutch plate

yep, pedal feel same. I G clamped the clutch arm back as far as it would go , and it moved only very very tiny amount more than the S/C was moving it. I also packed out the S/C 5mm so it would push the clutch arm further if the movement was availble. In both cases, the car still would go into gear.

So its wether the clutch realse plare or bearing. Any idea wgere the chepaest place is for a clutch kit? I may as well replace the lot while i'm at it

The fact that it was dragging suggest clutch plate and/or friction plate. Packing it out just allows it to go beyond the tolerance point (0.2mm above the rivets). Release bearing will rattle like hell when clutch out, quiet when clutch in. Search for Freelander clutch options

No rattling at all, everything feels and sounds normal apart from gear selection is not possible, dragging when clutch depressedand and in gear and the slight juddering. So actually, its not all normal

i think your best bet is sell the gaylander an buy a defender or a disco they dont fcuk up every time ya take em out
best thing is find a big river or canel drive the gay lander in
claim off the insurance and buy a disco with the procedes

Nickh75 - at least try and answer the tech query before spam the thread.

The judder will be from a warped clutch, prob from riding the clutch. At worst a scored flywheel.

Im sure when you take your box out you will find your clutch is down to rivets but hopefully its gone on the side away from the flywheel i had similar problems on a punto and it was a worn clutch plate and your best keeping your gaylander as the discos are not that great as people make out to be my dad got one his clutch went then month later is gbox lost second (common fault on the box) so yeah good luck

Glad you asked O.P., I was trying to work it out myself.

See My post on 'Bleeding the clutch', its a dragging clutch most likely, I had exact same symptoms, if the bite point of the clutch 'in the carpet' and pedal spongy at beginning of travel suspect the hydraulics.

I did on a Disco have the same symptoms, but that was a broken clutch arm!!
