Who can swap my chassis?

As I reside in Norway there will be lots of added costs and hassles having a chassis shipped and imported from the UK. Also, chances are that the Norwegian authorities will not approve a chassis swap. As such I am contemplating bringing my IIA SWB to the UK to get the chassis professionally swapped instead (for a galvanized Richards replica).

My questions:
  • Who carries out such work?
  • What will it cost approximately (cost of frame not included)?
  • What will the expected turn arround be?... I would do it in connection with a family road trip and would like itdone quick.
  • It makes sense to changen some of the other old parts that otherwise would have to come off the old frame for new parts. What should these be, at minimum (keeping in mind that I want to keep costs and turnarround down, especially labour). I'm thinkimg suspension and brake lines.

Any input will be appreciated.

There are many places that carry out this work, and the quality and price will vary widely. I couldn't give a price off the top of my head, but guess you would have to pay upwards of a couple of k to get a decent job. Also depends on what else you want replaced at the same time, and if you want the chassis painted before fitting.

Again a guess, but it should be possible to do the job in about three days, maybe a week, but that would only if you had all the parts that you wanted fitted waiting to go

Try looking in the classic Landrover mags, and phoning around getting some quotes, places like Dunsfold do a good job, but may be quite dear.

You could try a pm to James Martin, one of the members on the forum, he works on landrovers, might advise if he isn't interested himself.

I have a friend locally who has re-chassised a number of series for customers, but I am assuming you do not wish to drive all the way to West Cornwall.

Have a look on Richards site, they recommend these ... I've never used them but it would seem to me that it's almost the complete package if you're after a Richards chassis .. :)

that will be £1500 + all the extra bits they find that need doing at the same time. Theres bound to be a few. I'd budget more, maybe £1000 more ?

I did some searching on google and was surprised to see there's quite a few places that do it up in Scotland. I doubt you will want to be coming so far north for it though, I'm sure there are plenty in England. Prices seem to vary a lot, at least £3000 I would think.

About 3 years ago I was told to expect £3k from a couple of places. This included chassis, new brake pipes, leaf springs and shocks. There is likely to be something unexpected that needs attention so i would factor in longer / more flexibility in your tight schedule.

If the Norwegian authorities have an issue with chassis replacement, would it really make a difference if it's swapped in Norway or in the UK? I wouldn't have thought it would. Or am I missing something?

even if the Norwegian garage don't report it, it might not be easy to smuggle a chassis past customs :D

are the rules the same in countries that border Norway, might be easier to get a Swedish garage to do it, depends where you are I suppose, hopping on the ferry to the uk might be easier

i dont know what the rules are but ive had a few conversions and other work from norwegians ,so it must be something to make a trip worthwhile

Norway's Schengen, so no customs to Denmark or Sweden...

yes but if he had the chassis sent to a Norwegian garage it would be coming from the uk and as Norway is not a member state surely there would be some form of customs or checks on what goes in.

but the line was more in the spirit of mirth along the lines of trying to walk through with a chassis up your jumper :D
