Hi all
I have a 2000 D2 V8 auto (lpg) and it has started 'whistling/ringing' on the overrun. doesn't do it under load. occasionally it will do it at tickover and it seems to be coming from the right hand side of the engine (as I'm sat in)
The power steering seems to be slightly heavier although this could be my imagination. All levels are ok , nothing blowing I can see / hear. I do have a new serpentine belt to fit as i dont know when it was last replaced (109k on the clock now)
Any Ideas would be appreciated
Andy

Newer model than me but same engine i think.

belt tensioner bearing? pop the bonnet and see if you can locate it more closely. If so i think its called "the one penny trick" or a new bearing off ebay, just be careful not to damage it putting it in.

Actually come to think of it, if its any of the pullys bearings a good way to check would be to remove the fan cowling (2 clips) get a long flat 15m ring spanner, put it on the end of the tensioner and lever it clockwise, remove the belt and then systematicaly spin each pully and inspect to see if any of the aircon/water pump/alternator etc seem to be on thier way out perhaps, if your gonna change your belt anyway you may aswel check (5 min job). hope this helps.

maybe its the power steering bearing?

a long 15m - wot the hell does he need a 15 Metre long spanner for?

I meant a long 15 MILIMETER spanner, slight typing error, a 15 METER spanner, now that would just be silly (wouldnt get it under the bonnet!) :D

And yes you need it for leverage, last time i did it i couldnt find a long enough one so i "linked" 2 together to get better leverage. (an 18"bit of scaffolding pipe slipped over the spanner can sometimes be handy also).

When my alternator bearings went it had been 'ringing' for some time ... ;) I'd look at alternator first, see if the shaft/pulley moves. I could feel mine moving without removing the cowl or belt it ha got that bad!
