yey, another one of those "which one to buy" threads. Only this time a little more specific. So, as far as Land Rovers are concerned, I've only owned first generation Discos. But since I hate welding, I decided to get rid of my last one and get a "proper car". It didn't work. I tested different cars and I realised I want a Land Rover.

Also, I don't want to spend more than £3K (because to be perfectly honest, I don't really need a car)

So, I guess, it leaves me with very limited options:

  • Discovery II
  • Range Rover P38A
  • A really old Defender

Considering I don't want to do any welding and I'm not particularly good with electronics, whereas I'm quite good with mechanical stuff, what would you suggest?

Thanks.

They'll all need welding. If I had a choice though I'd look what defenders are about and as you don't neeeeeed one. Take your time. But I will say. Buy the one you want. Don't wait for what you think is a deal if that makes sence.

Something jap

A mate of mine had a similar dilemma could only afford a knackered defender or a nice disco, so went for the disco. 6 months later and it's being sold so he can get the defender.

I'm not suggesting that you get a defender , only that sometimes it's better to get what you want rather than what is more sensible.

Only you can decide though
As rk said take your time

Thanks everyone for the input.

Get yourself a nice preface lift disco 2 got mine for 3k

I'm quite tempted to do that, I like the way Discos look. I wish somebody suggested I get a P38A. I'll have to rebuild the garage door for a Disco :(

Something jap

erm... not sure I'd enjoy that!

but you'll look like a faggot driving one

That's exactly how I feel when I see a guy driving one. I won't be seen driving a Jeep or a FreakLander... that's for sure!

Have you driven a Freelander?
I thought not, cos if you had you'd know it'll drive better on the than any other Land Rover and it'll still tow a stranded D2 out the mud ;)

ok then I will ......get a p38 then you don't have to alter your garage door and you can sell your welder cause you wont need it;)

Yey, thanks for that :)

Other than wanting to own one, you've haven't really said what you'd like to do with it? Or doesn't that matter?

I've taken a break from off-roading, but I definitely need an estate car that can carry at least 4 adult passengers with comfort. I also haul stuff around occasionally, so I need a big estate car. I almost ended up buying a Volvo 960 but chickened out because of all the bad stuff I've heard about their turbos.

I think it depends if £3k is your total budget or just the money to buy. If it's your total budget then look for something about £1500 to £2000 and keep the rest for the things you'll want/need to buy for it.

Yes especially if its a defender, you'll need a good few hundred just for security on it.
