Hi all I have a 2004 3.0 td6 range rover.I thought I'd finally got it sorted so took it for its MOT today the tester failed it explaining someone had rearranged the cat or something like that.
The actual fail was exhaust catalytic convertor obviously modified.
Now it had passed previous mot,s with the same fault and as I've not long had it I don't know what he's on about he says "something had been took off and they've just ripped the insides of it out and then put it back on."
He also says its an easy fix and left it at that I've got it home and had a look under the bonnet now my theory is its the egr valve that's been messed with but upon looking I've found a couple of wires disconnected and a couple of pipes too near the egr.
Can anyone shed any light on what's missing or broken please I've took some pics but it won't let me upload them

Cheers for any help.

You can drag and drop pictures directly into a post if you have a computer. Left click the picture, hold the mouse button down and drag it to the post and let go the mouse button. I'll happily post picks of my 2005 Td6 ERG if you can provide the detail you need to see

Cats are generally under the car.
You need to look or ask the tester for a better explanation.

Sadly, drag and drop into LZ does not work on all computers or even all Windows computers.

Hi I know the cats underneath but he said the part that's missing is on top of the engine that's why I think its near the egr as there's a couple of pipes and plugs there that are disconnected I would be grateful for any pics if the engine bay so I can compare thanks all

It also failed because the check engine light doesn't come on he said that they had disabled it when they did the modification I thought it might be a bulb iut but had a look and it a led so I'm stumped with that aswell can you code the engine light not to come on at all

It sounds like the engine ECU has been remapped to remove the EGR and in the process the MIL light has been disabled. If that is the case, you have a problem, either you find out who did the remap and get it put back to standard, or you replace the ECU with an unmodified one.
I don't know about the UK MOT, but here it's technically illegal to remove or disable the EGR.

Hi heres some pics 20230204_140422.jpg 20230204_140412.jpg 20230204_140407.jpg 20230204_140346.jpg 20230204_140403.jpg 20230204_140343.jpg 20230204_140444.jpg

Cats just underneath behind the turbo its probs been cut open and gutted,

Its telling you the cats been tampered with nothing to do with egr or stuff unplugged its litterly telling you a big metal box underneath has been tampered with

When i gutted mine i cut on the seam and smashed the insides out and ran 1 continues seam weld and it always passed mot as it didnt look tampered with,

Go underneath and look for signs of it being opened, your wasting your time looking at egr and having all engine covers off,

The filter with the open pipe end is normal its an exhaust for a solenoid if its not there it wooshes,

The electrical plugs for fuel burning heater or the heater/block coolant flow

Also check engine light on a td6 does not come on and go off on ignition
its euro 3 emissions standard and dosent have too

if its on plug it into diagnostics

iv got videos up in a post before

Thanks for all the replies I'm going back to the garage tomorrow to see exactly what he meant and to let him know about the engine light.I know the cats underneath but the bloke at the garage said it was easy to see under the bonnet and I assumed they had messed with the egr hopefully I'll understand better tomorrow I'll let u know what I find out.

Just add my bit, if you look you can see the vac pipe with blue stripe that goes the egr valve and I cant see anything amiss with it, the little filter is just a breather and is open ended as shown and is correct, the the plug I think would go to the fuel cooler fan if it was fitted which most td6 dont seem have.

Hi all an update for you I went back to the garage and now he says I need a new cat as the one that's been on there for years and passed previous mot,s is no good I asked him what he was on about when he said some thing missing under the bonnet but he just changed the subject so like everyone on here has said it's definitely a problem with the cat now totally different story to that on Saturday also he won't believe me when I told him the engine light on these models doesn't light up when the engine is started I even showed him this forum and he still don't believe so now I'm stuck does anybody know of a sympathetic mot garage near Rotherham I could take it to for a second opinion
Thanks to all of you for your previous replies

Well. that's a new one on me, I thought the MIL light lit up as part of the dashboard lamp test when turning on the ignition on all cars.
