What tyres are best in snow.

just got in from ferrying the doris around (she is a care in the comunity carrer) loads of cul-de-sac's and off the main roads .
its started to rain/sleet here on top of compact snow/ice
my new bfg mt's were fookin amazing easily as good as the general at's

Yer it's a small difference... to be honest though, any Defender with a good driver should be able cope with 90% of snow/ice situations regardless of tyre choice. Last year on my 110 I was running two worn out Goodyear Wrangler 7.50 R16s, and two ancient 'bar grip' muds, and it still pulled its way through the worst of it.

The right tyres however just seem to give you that extra 10% that you need sometimes. T'would be quite interesting to do a proper scientific comparison side-by-side of road tyres vs A/Ts vs M/Ts, to see which would come out on top.

i've not tried MT's yet but the AT's i have fitted have gone anywere someone with MT's have been in the recent snow round here. strangley though i was the only one using AT's out of about 20 other landies that were out and about.

hi there, thought i'd add my bit, i've got Avon rangemasters (7mm) on the front and firstone town (10mm) and countrys on the back ( came with car) the avons are rubbish in the snow i live at the top of a hill in deepest darkest wales (one part 1 in 3 and covered in ice) they understeer and dont like going down hill unless i accelerate ( not ideal) the firestones are fine (no slipping at all) but rather horrid the rest of the time.

I have General Grabber AT2 235/70/16 on my 300 tdi, dropped pressures to 20psi well impressed with them.Took it down a lane no-one else had been down, single track & drifts coming off the fields up to the wheel arches, coped no problem

Just put these on, 245 width, REALLY impressed!

i run insa turbo sahara on my disco 2 and drop them to 20 front 24 rear pulled a 90 out(off road up hill 12" snow ) no probs, bit of road noise though

So how come no one is mentioning Pirelli Scorpion? I got them all round on mine and if I'm in a daft mood I can get to my house up a fairly steep (but not very long) grass hill currently covered in about 12" of snow with no traction assistance or low range. They are ok in the summer on tarmac too so no buggering about swapping tyres for winter or summer.

This evening ...

This is what I did this evening!

Copy of email to my chums, who will be SICK jealous! HA HA!

Just spent 5 hours pulling cars and vans up the slope on the A73 to Newmains from Cleland, and three 7½ tonners, and one truck the guy said was weighed today at 22 tonnes! I cleared the road single handed! What fun!

I had to keep driving the wrong way down the dual carriageway to get them, because the idiots went into TWO lanes and then got stuck. and then they kept on driving alongside and stopping beside the abandoned vans so they blocked the road. NOT ONE thought to wait with a clear space in front so as the emergency crews and people with 4x4s could get past and help them. It's not as if they were going anywhere anyway.

I reckon to have pulled out about 35 - 40 cars and the trucks.
NOT ONE of the drivers knew there was a tow-eye in the car, where it was or where to fit it.
One woman gave me a hard time! She waited quite a long time after that.
Stupid BMW on slicks.

No problem at all. Utterly amazing! Low range, and canny throttle, and off we went as if we were on a clear road, it really was that dramatic. The drivers of the 7½ tonners was stunned ... and all three had said not to bother, there would be no way the Disco would pull their trucks up the icy slope. The driver of the 20 tonner took a video of the whole tow from the drivers seat as we did it!
One of the van men did too.

Good fun, and a really SMUG feeling!
02.30 .... supper time!

Then ZZZzzzzzz...............

Discos Rule, and General Grabber AT2s are AMAZING!

ive got insa turbo special tracks on my 90 and they have been great! can be a bit slippy on the ice, but only if im trying to drive normally and on compact snow and deep snow they have been faultless! some of the country B roads around near me last week were half a meter deep and i didnt have any problems

I think whats help on the ice and compact snow, where they have be marked/ sliced a little on the treads on rocks off road, its added in those little groves snow tyres have! or just a little extra grip!

then my mums gaylander has road tyres on and she hasnt had any issue either, I think alot of the time it comes down to how you drive, especially on the icy/ compacted snow roads,

she wouldnt have any chance in the deep stuff i was getting through

now i have got my new hours and off for two days all the snow has gone now  but they keep threatening snow so all i can do is wait and see what happens :(

Agree with CharlesY Grabber AT2 just fitted 6 weeks ago and have been brilliant , really have to provoke it to get any slippage and I have been trying . Alot of drifting in Northern Ireland and tractors only passing some local roads but beaten a few Def90s up the hills so far, big improvement as original road tyres on Disco since I bought it and had to change then due to cracking sidewalls from old age for MOT

Almost forgot earlier today filling the chariot up a punter came up and said what were the tyres on my Disco, so I politely explained and he replied that his X5 was unable to move off his drive and he needed better tyres, turns out he lives on the same road as me and a damn lot nearer to town and has been stranded for 6 days without the hill which my wifes Volvo will clear with a little coaxing and careful driving every day..... not a clue

There are three requirements for making progress on dodgy icy snowy roads:

1. A driver with just a reasonable amount of common sense, and a good feel for the road.

2. Suitable TYRES.

3. A LandRover

You Jammy dodger! You should have charged £5 per car though :D

I thought about it, but then I realised it rubs LANDROVER superiority in their faces MORE, if we say we don't do it for money, we do it for FUN!

A Sunday newspaper is on the case now.
