I've got approx £4k to buy a new car but cant decide what to buy. Either a disco 2 diesel or a range rover p38 diesel. I know they both have issues with air suspension but that can be cured with a spring conversion. Is there any common faults that i should know about and what would you buy and why. Any info will be great as i want the best buy for my money.

Thanks

Lee

I had a P38 for about yrs. Now own a Disco.
Air suspension is not the only issue on the P38; a good `un is a lovely drive but good`uns are hard to find now. Many have been bought by people who think, because they`re getting cheaper, thy`re gonna be cheap to run... they`re not. Many are being sold within your budget, but repairs can be very expensive. P38s are diy-able but many (not all) will require lots of effort (and time and cash) to keep in good nick.
Personally I chose a 300tdi Disco to avoid all possible problems with electrical suspension & engine management systems. OK, less comfort than a TD5 but for me it`s a price I`m prepared to pay.
Try to test drive a couple of examples of whatever you`re interested in. Maybe you`ll fal in love with the P38, and take a chance on one, maybe you`ll prefer the comfort of a TD5, or maybe opt for the more basic, character of the earlier Disco?
Anyway good luck, and take your time choosing.

i would say td5 was more comfortable ,basically the same as 300,but with more power ,air suspension on td5 can be removed easily and better than it can from rr as it is only rear axle , 300 is very likely to be rotten underneathe body ,td5 rotten on chassis but good body ,early td5 is could value if chassis reasonable,i would say biggest difference is the drive, totally different feel ,it depends on which one you prefer

Gotta agree there, try testing all of `em, and go buying with eyes wide open, a very suspicious attitude and fingers crossed!

I own a 300tdi disco now, had it just over a year and would like a change. Mine is in good nick, no rust, body work in good condition, engine pulls like a train. I've put roof lights on, front and rear diff guards, egr removed, de-cat pipe, removed radiator fan, fitted cb, new engine and gearbox rubber mounts.
But now i would like something new, would love a p38 but looks like it could cost a lot to keep on the road:confused:

Itchy feet? Looking for a change? I do understand. If you`re set on a P38 look at the threads on buying `em. It seems there are good `uns out there, but lots of money pits too!
If you`re prepared to work on `em yourself, and it sounds like you`re handy with a set of spanners, they are DIY-able. But will 99% sure be less reliable than a 300tdi. More refinement=more to go wrong.
Check out the "rswsolutions" site for trouble shooting the EAS system. Good site with good clear videos.
The Landyzone R-R crew are very helpful and I`m sure you`ll find someone local to you to help inspecting a possible car if you like, but beware most of `em are (by definition) somewhat prejudiced in favour of `em. (They prob think I`m some sort of traitor tho`)!
Buy one by all means, but try and do a lot of research first. A good `un is a joy.....but...

I think i will go with a p38. If i have trouble with the suspension, i will fit a spring kit, drive it nice and easy, service it regular read up on any electrical faults that could happen and just prey i can find a nice one:)
