Hello fellow sufferers / fans. I have my first Landrover - a 2002 freelander TD4 - moved to it from a c220 would ya beleive - cos i wanted something with less electrics to go wrong.....LOL

First week - lovely black smoke ll over driveway - had a gander - a set of intercooler hoses cured the most of it, only no boost pressure and bit reeky when foot absolutely planted - easy fix - dont plant foot!

Second week - a tad sluggish compared to normal - bit of research and a crankcase filter / pcv filter ? recommended - ok methinks. An absolutely joy of a job it turned out to be. 30 mins to get the air cover off and when i did the air filter looked like the black pearls sails. Last mechanic is a lying hound i decide... This jobby hasnt been changed since ceaser was a lad. NTW - new one popped in. New filter in the crankcase jobby too. easy enough. Pop it together and bobs your aunties hubby.

Enter the following monday.... drive 1/2 mile down the road and the TC / ABS / Hill descent lights come on. Odd - i say to myself (as im the only one there) and turn car off to investigate. Nothing but faint wiff of warmed plastic under bonnet... oh well, ill nip home and take a peek - but ALAS!! the beggar wont start.... clickety click. RAng wife to come jump me....ahem - steady on!! set of leads on and away she goes -rough though and doesnt even get me home.. srs and battery light join the party along with the 3 amigoes? another jump and i get it home - nothing obvious wrong. Belt seems intact etc

So, new friends, what wrong with the blasted thing now! to recap. BS / HILL descent/ TC come on and off every minute or so, srs and battery light come on after 2-3 mins - engine dies after 4 mins - i swear heavily by 5.

knackered battery ??
bad connection .. fault in charging system ??

just guessing .. as the td4 with it's various sensors 'n motor management system
needs a healthy consistent supply of electricity ..

i'd be looking at battery condition .. 'n charging system for starters ..

Cheers, would it go as quick as that from fine to hammered in day? i know the merc was a pia when the battery started. The one in it is a 68ah - is that the right one? seems light.

Ill stick another one in and see - but when shes running wouldnt she stay running unless the alternators done....

Hi and welcome - new friend - you'll be on here lots I suspect.

Nice first post - you need a sense of humour to own a LandRover. :D

Fit the biggest battery that you will fit in the tray - mine is an 80amp job.

Low /knacked battery can put all the light on.

Do a search on here for 'the 3 amigos' - you'll find out they are a common problem.

As for the smoke - are you buying supermarket diesel? Morrison's is the worst, but they all encourage extra smoke on overtaking / acceleration.

I only use Shell V-Power and get more mpg as well as no smoke.

Also you need to check the EGR, as it sounds like maintainance was not at the top of the list before. Disable it or by-pass it.

Singvogel.

battery specs. from the owners manual :
diesel ..
type .. 'H6 or H7, sealed for life, dependant on territory'
rating .. ' 75 amp/hour (H6) .. 80 amp/hour (H7) '
