What have you done to your Landie today.

Not a lot as usual, as according to my somewhat sparse and boring profile I really am too busy building a house. The poor old Landie is always at the back of the queue which will change once everything else is out of the way... I hope...

A couple of months back I moved the spare engine to somewhere more convenient, well, less inconvenient anyway. Took the photos with you lot in mind.

Happy new year.

So not a big thing but fitted 5 new dust covers to my tyre valves!
Have ordered a new silicone oil cooler plug as the current one looks like the original one and is weeping slightly but if it fails it can lead to a catastrophic coolant loss and engine over heat and head gasket failure bit dramatic but reality!
Also ordered a new gear stick bias plate and spring set as the gear stick sits over 1st and 2nd gear when in neutral.

Will be fitting these when i get chance although the coolant plug will be a priority and getting fitted sooner rather than later.

Driving home from work took a tiny greenlane cut-through short cut and bloody think I've snapped the center pinion in the diff. At first I thought I'd done a cv or a halfshaft, when I limped it home in difflock I jacked up each front independently and both rotated (I have an ashcroft atb in both axles) and thought that can't be right, so I put them both back on the ground, took it out of difflock and I could rotate the front prop easily. Bollocks.

Both front hubs etc off tomorrow and diff out to see. Hope i haven't churned any shrapnel too badly as the diff is only a couple of years old! Ah well, at keast it's not supposed to be wet!!

Bet it’s a shaft…

Hope it’s an easy fix for you , post pics tomorrow please,

Got round to fitting the bias plate on Monday which went quite easily to be honest, only had to remove the first plate and had easy access to replace the plate which had snapped completely off.
I can get all gears nicely now without guessing where 3rd and 4th are.

So, last night on the way home from work i stopped at B&M to pick some bits up and as i got out the car i noticed water dripping form underneath the front left side of the car, i popped the bonnet and saw the coolant reservoir was almost empty!
It was the oil cooler pipe plug, it had gone from a weep to a constant fast drip, fortunately i had the spare at home ready to be fitted.
I nursed the car home (2 miles) with a bottle of water from said shop and fitted the plug, topped up again with water and this morning all seems tight and no coolant loss.
I should have done this on Monday whilst i had the tools out to do the bias plate as i only took 10 minutes.
Lessons learned.

Interesting read from another forum re the ATB

Luckily the local indie had one halfshaft in stock (unfortunately both cv and shaft are Britpart items), I wasn't impressed with the machining on the shaft or the splines but beggars cant be choosers and its got me back on the road so that's a good thing.
Will drain out the diff oil first thing tomorrow and then do another one in 500 mile or so just on the off-chance that any metal did get past the seal into the axle, although I doubt it and didn't see any evidence, but having to drive it back home for 2 and a bit miles I feel its good to do.

Quick pic of new cv and shaft in place! Time for a beer! 🍺

Very interesting read, I've had the rear in for 5 years now, and front for at least 3, maybe more, with no untoward effects....apart from last night! Doh! When I reconed the front axle (9 years ago) I replaced all bearings and cv's, but the cv's were britpart...I don't know if this has anything to do with it letting go or not, but I will think about the ashcroft ones, it's just a bit too dear for me atm !! 😊

Don’t worry about using the cheaper CVs if they break they are easier/cheaper to change than a diff.
Do you have magnetic fill plugs? Can’t remember if this was a mod or standard to catch any filings(bit like sump plugs)

No unfortunately not Phill, they just have a smooth black layer on the inside of the drain and filler plugs. I was surprised this morning by the amount of cv grease that had found its way into the axle, it was obviously more liquid because of the ep oil in there, but I'm now hoping my oil seals haven't gone again as before now I overfilled the cv and it pushed past the seals! The one shot just didn't seem enough to me so packed around the back of the cv once it was in place with a few fingers worth of the stuff!

After breaking down on my way home Wednesday night, after my alternator failed I have had a good day ripping into it!
Fitted my new denso nippon alternator, fan belt and waterpump!
Just waiting on the battery (which is on trickle charge) to put back in then I can get the enjin nice and hot and properly bleed the coolant through! Will be doing that on Monday most likely, along with a steering box adjustment as it's gone a little slack..., successful day! And nice to get everything off and on in one day, very happy, love defenders! 😊

Interesting read from another forum re the ATB

Just read this and this quote makes, as you say, very interesting reading.
"Incidentally, if you fit any kind of locker or LSD/ATB in the front, it would seem that upgrading the front shafts and CV joints is a necessity as the CV ends of the shafts are too skinny and snap easily. I don't know if that applies as well to slippery road use like you have as it does to proper off off-roading, but Nige is pretty convincing in his comments on the matter. Rear is less of a problem."

Worth knowing.
