hi all.,

ive done a search but couldn't seem to find an answer.

im wanting to find out what engine is in my p38 4.0 SE 1998 auto.

is there a website listing all the engines etc or a thread on here (couldn't seem to find one )

cheers fellas

there aint many injuns to chose from on the v8, 4.0 which is a 3.9 really and 4.6.Couple type of 4.6 i think

i have the 4ltr is it a gems/ thor / efi ??

im kind of band new/3 months into Range rovers and very keen to learn more. eventually maybe possibly hopefully by a spare engine and refurb it etc . just want to get my hands dirty and learn.

Have a look under the bonnet - is there a black square cover on the top of the engine or a silver bunch-of-banana-lookalikes? The square cover is the GEMS, the bunch-of- bananas is the THOR!!! That's the easiest way to tell!!! Post up a pic if you're not sure:cool::cool:

Good advice. The year will give you a clue aswell. upto 1999 + /- they had the Gems engine with Lucas Sagem engine managment after that it is the Thor Bosch Motronic M5.2.1 system. Its generally regarded as the later system is superior, but saying that the Gems is also a fine system.
Both systems are EFI (Electronic fuel injection)
I would wager yours is a Gems from the age.
