Just got my first Defender, 1 2001 110 CSW and want to get it waxoyled. The underneath looks pretty sound atm and I want to try and keep it that way. Some of the doors are going a bit in small places.

Anyone got any recommendations as to who is good in Surrey/Sussex/Kent, good as in proper job for a reasonable price. Also would it be wise to try and get waxoyl pumped into the doors?

I want to try my hand at off roading / pay and play in the next month, do I waxoyl first or have some fun in it first then get it all cleaned off and waxoyled?

To be honest with you, you'd be best off with buying a compressor, Shultz gun and a bulk tin of waxoyl and doing it yourself. That way you know it has been done properly and you will save yourself a fortune by the time you've done it again in a few years time!

You can get a compressor for sub £100 and a waxoyl gun for £15. Waxoyl for a 5 litre tin is about £30 and you'll also need a 1 litre tin to fit the gun and decant into.

Pull the door cards off and fill the bottoms up. Watch the windows though! :D

That appears to be the stuff.

Get it all ordered and do it before the weather gets any ****ter!

And chuck it everywhere.... absolutely everywhere. Just watch your zorst though or you'll have a funny smell ;) And maybe not the windows :)

thinners?

I guess its to thin down the waxoyl so it flows well through the gun?

what kind of thinners and what ratio? do you know?

yeh, you cant use the gun without thinners. when a mate tried without it just blocked up.

it tells you the ratio on the tin, cant quite remember now!

just any thinners will do? like the standard they sell Halfrods branded?

50%? wow! that means off a 5L tin of waxoyl I'll be spraying 10L of the stuff? guess that I'll have loads left then... not sure how much a 90 chassi would take

Its not so much the spraying I'm concerned about, although without a pit or a ramp it could be an unpleasant process.

Its the scraping and cleaning off the flaking that sounds like a pig, have read elsewhere that it'll take about 2 days. Now I'm not flush by any means but suddenly £400 for the prep and waxoyl doesnt sound too bad.

5l tin normally i use per 90

havent you got local jet wash facilities with water proofs youll get most though its worth taking something to lay on top of bulk head out riggers and sills and rear tub around rear cross member often the worst

I got mine cleaned by laying underneath it with the pressure washer..... got wet, but it got fairly clean.

do you have to clean it really well? im asking that as with the pressure washer it does get rid of mud, but a bucket of hot water and sponge cleans better.... do I have to go to that extreme, or is it ok to spray the waxoyl with chassi cleaned only with pressure washer?

As I took the seat box out and floors, I did clean that area of the chassi with bucket and sponge and it looks much better than with pressure washer only...

I've heard that Dinitrol is a much better and longer lasting alternative to Waxoyl.
Where Waxoyl dries out and will start peeling off in a couple of years, Dinitrol stays more waxy and rubbery, also it won't get washed off the chassis like Waxoyl does. Yes it's more expensive, but i think it's worth it. Mines getting done next month when we go to our workshop, as i really don't fancy doing it on the drive

Waxoyl or Dinitrol ?

Right boyed up by your assurances oh how easy it is... here is my plan...

1) Buy some car ramps at least 240mm wide, 2.5T capacity.
2) Put landy on ramps in low, 1st and in diff lock.
3) Jet wash everything front end, and repeat 2 & 3 for rear end.
4) Leave to dry for a day or so
5) Buy a shultz gun and a compressor that can get to at least 90psi (does it have to be at least 2HP?), and a 1 litre can of Waxoyl, and a 10L can of waxoyl, and some thinners.
6) Spray the f**k out of everything shoving the wand into the chassis rails, and the bulkhead if I can work how where to stick it.
7) Either remove door cards or drill a hole in doors to spray in there.

8) Rue the day I ever listened to you guys and wished I'd not been so tightfisted!

Happy days ahead, laying in a lake of Waxoyl...

excellent!!! good on you mate!!

dont forget that before spraying the waxoyl, lay a tarpaulin on your drive and then drive the landy over it.. you dont want to do a mess of your drive!

Find a local commercial/truck steam cleaners, they charge about £60 for a hot chassis wash and normally do a pukka job.
They got mine really clean, all I did is wait a few days for it to dry, jacked it up and sprayed it underneath myself.
I sprayed mine with oil based gloss black, I choose gloss because the mud /dirt does not stick to it as much and is alot easier to keep clean.
