Disco 300tdi, 1996. I noticed a funny noise underneath the bonnet and it's definitely coming from the water pump. Sounds like an old shoddy kettle that tries to boil some water. The sound "palette" consists of low humming, hissing and bubbling.

Can it be some air in the system or is the fault mechanical?

When I heard the noise earlier, I thought it was something to do with the fuel system because my accelerator was vibrating and the engine wasn't as quick to gain revs as usual. Then the vibration disappeared and when I stopped at my earliest convenience it was obvious that the noise came from the water pump.

:wtf:

change the water pump and see if it stops

they're only about £20 so a **** load cheaper than a new engine if it fails when you're driving at speed.

Thank you guys for your input! £20? My local garage quoted £160 wtf!

£20... is that on ebay? I was going to get one off Eurocarparts or Rimmer bros.

While we're on it, what else do I need to change the pump myself? "P Gasket"? Anything else?

@spin1 hehehe! judging by your nickname, you know a lot about spinning stuff!

do it yourself , its so easy.. you need some gasket sealer, check your belts while you are at it. check thermostat , take your time and you will save plenty of cash... you will also need antifreeze unless you save what you drain out.:D

As above , do it now or be very sorry . Dont use a Britpart or you will be doing it again soon . I go for the ones with the non ferrous impeller out of choice but shouldnt matter if your coolant is right . P gasket is further back , a layer deeper , you dont need to do it unless you need to do it - you will know (if you need to do it) because your water level in the header will drop over time and there will be rust marks down the block behind the alternator . You may want to look at the state of the 10mm boltheads on the M8 bolts that hold it in - they are often chewed up and if so may become more so getting them out so it might pay to buy some new ones before you start . Gasket sealant is good but not instead of a gasket . Another idea is to use some light break threadlock and to only do the bolts to the spec torque rather than cranking them hard - this is often overlooked . Its not a hard job to do at all - the worst you will get is skinned knuckles and backache .
