OK so things not going well for me in my new ownership.

I have noticed today that there is a really annoying moaning sound coming from the rear that gets faster as the vehicle gets faster.

I have also noticed that when turning corners (full left I think), there is a much harder rouger sound.

I have been reading on here all night and think it is either / and

1. Rear Wheel Bearings
2. VCU
3. VCU Bearings

So, to save some time and money I want to try and eliminate this myself.

If I disconnect the rear prop shaft between the VCU and rear diff, would this eliminate the VCU, or do I have to disconnect both props ? (I assume this puts the vehicle in "Mondo Mode" then and is safe to drive.

Do I actually have to remove the VCU and props or can they be left on but disconnected.

Thanks

You can remove just one prop, but it's easier to remove both props and the vcu as one piece. If removing one prop only then the other prop will still spin the vcu/bearings. Mondo mode is front wheel drive only. This is a safe thing to do. But don't leave the prop half connected. If one were to dig into the road it will try to pole volt yer Freelander. And you'll have to advise your insurance company if you go mondo.

I had read about the true thing, but can one or two millimeter difference make that much noise ?

I take it tyre pressures should be checked all round too ? 26 or 31 ?

There are various thoughts on tyre pressures but I set mine to 32 all round. doing what TMHM has suggested would be my first task as it is quick, simple and costs nowt. Then look at removing the prop and VCU.

To be honest, if a bearing noise gets worse when going round a corner the general consensus is that it is a wheel bearing problem :p
