Hi All,

I seem to be having a problem with my '84 range rover. It has a Rover
V8 engine,
twin carbs but it is running badly. It seems to be misfiring on more
than one
cylinder and it also backfires when I rev it. I have changed the Spark
Plug gaps
to 0.30in, replaced the Distributor cap, rotor arm, HT leads. I have
also
replaced the Fuel filter but can't seem to get it to run right.

Can anybody point me in the right direction to see what could be
wrong. Also the order of the ht leads seems to be wrong in the haynes
manual.
Standing at the front of the engine the order was

8 7
6 5
4 3
2 1
Front

In the haynes book this is
7 8
6 5
4 3
2 1
Front

Also the order on the disitributor cap is wrong in the manual as well.
I have
put it to how it was before I started playing.
Does anybody have the correct order and how to determine where the
starting position is on
the disitributor cap to get the correct order?

I'm learning lots already, I just need more guidance.

Any help would be very much appreciated,

Thanks,

[ Rover V8 running poorly ]

There used to be a good site on Rover V8's but is down for the moment:
http://www.rover-v8.co.uk/
You could always try this one:
http://members.lycos.nl/austinroversd1/ignition.html
And, in news:alt.fan.landrover is much V8 knowledge...

Take a look at your fuel system, while you're at it. Mis- / backfiring could
occur if it's running lean IIRC.

Good luck.

Firing order: 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

My haynes manual is right (1988), and you have the right order first in your
post.

There's a little pokey outy thing (sorry, best description I've got!), about
90 degrees counter clockwise of the vacuum dohicker... The lead at that
pokey outy thing is 8, and then running clockwise, it goes 4-3-6-5-7-2-1.
There should be one of the clips between 8 and 4, and also between 5 and 7.
The 1-8 clip is at the front of the dizzy..

Make sure there's no cracks in the distributor cap, and that there's no
traces on the inside (look like dark lines)

HTH...

Sorry, meant 4-8 clip, not 1-8 clip... :(

Have you checked the oil level in the carb dashpots recently?

Take the plugs out, all at the same time, and put the tips of your fingers in
the holes and bump it over sever times.
This is how you figure out the order if you have no idea what is number 1 or
the order.
BTW number 1 should be the cylinder that is closest to the radiator. If you
look, on a "v" engine, it is slightly angled like a parallelogram. Most, not
all, makes number the forward most one Number1.
YOu just get the pattern as is turns over then pick a plug wire, take off the
dist cap, and put the wire to the cap teminal that the rotor button has just
passed as that cylinder blew on your finger.
Note the direction of the rotot button turning so you will know if it just
passed it or if it is not there yet.
It does not matter what terminal on the dist you make number one...not even
with Fords that put a 1 on the cap..all the engine cares about is that right
after teh compression builds, the spark occurs, the n the next cyl that build
pressure and so on.
