Unusual S2a rear axle. Any ideas?

Hi,
My S2a has been throwing oil out of the rear axle pinion, I have a new seal ready to fit (I ordered the usual pinion seal that fits most series land rovers with a rover axle). Crawled underneath this morning to do the job but the axle looks unusual, it's the same general style as a rover axle but there is no oil seal retainer or the classic ring of screws which would hold the oil seal retainer in place, looks like the seal would be changed by digging it out like on a salisbury axle. Anyone know what axle this is, I am guessing its an odball maybe off some LR variant, I dont want to dig the old seal out until I know I have the right replacement. Any help much appreciated.

By the way the front axle is standard rover and I do not have any unusual 'wind up' in 4wd.

Just a thought ... I may be wayyyy off .... but could it possibly be a diff off a rover car ( not 4wd ) of some sort? Sometimes people wanted the diff ratio of 4.1 off Rover cars ( especially if you have a 6! ) and perhaps they just swapped it on wholesale.

Bit bloody odd that one. I know it wont solve the problem long term buuuuut, when my pinnion seal was knackered and wouldn't budge (castlated nut) I chucked Silkolene Rhino 140 in it. Ran fine for 3 years no leaks right until I sold it.
Still on the road, current owner does the same.

Regards WP.

Just crawled underneath and looked again, generaly it's like a rover axle, same shape , breather where it should be and standard LR, filler plug is where it should be. pinion housing looks right exept it extends right out to the drive flange, there is no ring of bolts holding a seal retainer just a mudseal and drive flange. At the bottom of the pinion casting there is a flat area which I dont think is normal.

Hi Bilko You have an ENV type Diff . Undo and remove pinion shaft locknut-withdraw flange and mudshield from pinion shaft. Prise out oilseal from diff using screwdriver or hammer and chisel. Smear outside with jointing compound make sure lip is facing inwards and tap home, refit mud shield and flange torq. to100/120 ft lbs .I hope this solves your problem.

Hi Guys and thanks for the replies, Bonnybaggot you are absolutely right with the method of changing the seal but I dont think it's an ENV diff , since it's also not a salisbury I'm baffled. I've just found a picture of my diff on the Pangolin site described as a 'standard diff' with some notes about it being similar to a rover P4, the illustration is the top picture on the page and is certainly not a standard diff as I know it it's the same as mine with no seal retainer, very strange. I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules by including a link, it's just to the axle illustration page. http://www.pangolin4x4.com/pangolin4x4/reference/lib/axles/axles.html

HI There are 3 types of diffs for series 11a / 111 Rover Salisbury and EN V. So if it wasnt Rover or Salisbury , theres only one culprit left.

Hi Bonnybaggot, I agree with the logic absolutely but I'm as sure as I can be that it's some form of rover axle, the shape is very different from both the Salisbury and ENV, all I'm concerned about is having the right replacement seal before I dig out the old one, I use the old truck every day so down time is not an option. We have a local Land Rover guru so I've arranged to drop by later today for his opinion. I'll post again with the result. Many thanks to yourself and the other guys for taking the time to help.

Hi Guys,
The local LR Guru looked, grunted a few times then pronounced it to be of rover origin, he tells me a few axles were made this way, they are aparently rare but he has seen one or two before. I'm going to tackle the job today so I hope he's right and that my standard rover seal will fit.
Thanks to everybody.

It's similar, my standard seal did not fit so I've reduced the oil level to minimise the discharge, I guess 'thats life' with a LR.
