Totally clueless, just bought one on ebay, 1979-1980??

Yeah - nice looking machine. It's not a defender, its a series 3 but the good news is that parts are cheap - a complete exhaust with fittings is a little over £50, worth getting the fittings 'cos you can cut off all the old ones - it's much quicker.

Back box is about £15. Get the gasket and 4 bolts also as you'll probably have to cut the old one off. I did mine in the summer, no need even to jack the car up. Good luck with your new Landy (btw it's a series 3, not a defender, but you've probably already noticed that!)

A possible problem appears to be the chassis plate is missing! Unless you have that separate. It should be fixed to the bulkhead by the gear lever next to the red and black information plate and have the chassis number stamped on it. This should match up with the chassis number stamped on the front offside spring hanger, though on a motor of this age that has often been replaced and the number is lost.

vin no will be on brake pedal box ,run it on straight unleaded petrol eventually you get 4 x exhaust steel seats fitted then head becomes "unleaded"

Hi and thanks for all the posts and words of advice.

Went to pick it up yesterday with a borrowed trailer. I told the seller on the phone that all it needed to do was start and drive onto a trailer, he said it would do both. It did neither although my bro was there, as a mechanic he eventually got it to start. Then found out no gears could be selected so it wouldn't drive anywhere let alone onto a trailer. Gutted  Wasted time, even at £695 I agree it was cheap but not what I wanted, I need a runner, fine if it needs work but it needs to run.

So was about to set off to Cardiff this afternoon to buy a Vitara with the snorkel and bits and bobs when out of the blue got offered an N reg disco for £600. It drives sweet as a nut and my lad is proper chuffed. So he is now a land rover owner after all. Thanks again for the help.
