Hello folks

I have browsed the web and have still been unable to find an answer.

I need to replace the steering knuckle ball joints on my Disco II, parts 11 and 13 on attached diagram.

I will buy a tool to do this job but want to know which tool will work. Specifically which tool has the correct size of adaptors in it.

I have seen tools from American tool companies and many posts from users who have replaced ball joints on American 4x4's.

Has anyone on here completed this job and which tool did you use?

Many thanks, Neil.

Those parts appear to be similar to trackrod ends.
If so, they would be a tapered pin in a matching hole.
The only ways I know of getting them out are:

  1. Heat with some sort of pressure applied to help break the joint, or
  2. Shock, again with pressure applied to break the joint and force the parts apart.

The only method I've ever employed is the second, using a fairly heavy tool that looks a bit like a twin bladed chisel or sometimes a pair of hammers banging at either side of the ring part at the same time.

Look for something called a ball joint splitter.

Is it the tool for removal and installation of the ball joints in the hub?
If it is you will struggle to buy the correct adapter that fits, I had to modify and cut bits out of a piece of scaffold pole, because where the press needs to be its not totall flat for installing the ball joint. I don't have a pic if it but once in there you'll see what I mean. Ill try and find a link to the tool I use to press them in

Yeah td5tool that's the kind of thing I keep getting in search results. I also found hydraulic puller/press type tools as well.

Like you found out, the adaptors in the set aren't the correct size and you made your own with scaffy tubing.

I reckon I'll buy one of those ball joint puller kits and see what size the adaptors are when I get it.

Cheers for your help.

Alright folks

Lets just clear something up here so that people who don't know any better don't get the wrong information.

This post is about a tool to remove steering knuckle ball joints from the hub carrier. IT IS NOT ABOUT REMOVING TAPERED TRACK ROD ENDS.

The steering knuckle ball joints are a press fit into the hub carrier, as I said at the start of the post, items 11 and 13 in the diagram. The hub is then attached to these by the tapered parts which can be removed by hitting them with hammers.

Pm irishrover as he had p38 kit and drive shaft alignment tool or JamesMartin should advise
