Timing Marks....

RANT MODE ON

As far as I can tell there are 2 different ways of doing the timing, one is easier the other is not..

HAYNES
Make sure EP Mark is aligned with pointer
#1 valve should be fully open
Fit chain et voila job is complete

LAND ROVER MANUAL
Get Valve Nearly Fully Open (who uses NEARLY ?)
Mark Cylinder Block and Camshaft sprocket
Make dial test indicator ZERO at this point
Rotate Sprocket clockwise until its back at ZERO
Mark Camshaft where the previous cylinder mark is
Measure distance in between the 2 marks and make a middle mark on the sprocket
Line that mark up with the Cylinder mark and that's timing complete.

Thoughts ?
Haynes seems a lot simpler and more precise from the point of view of open or closed not nearly open.

Why the difference ? I assume the rotation of a dial gauge is basically meaning that the sprocket will be a little bit further around than the Haynes would have had it.

haynes is wrong though you may get lucky ,cam on ep can be up to 4 degrees, it gives an idea but is not exact

That's what I was thinking after my post.. the Valve is OPEN for a very long time in regards timing whereas if you say "almost open" you know exactly where you are. and then do a fixed advance of a dial gauge.

yes set dti to zero just before peak mark cam sprocket , turn through peak so dti rises then stop as soon as it reads zero again ,mark sproket , then mark a line half way between the 2 marks thats true ex peak, sprocket has 6 vernier key ways to enable chain to be tight but cam to still be at peak

James thanks for your help with this one... I don't think I saw an answer on the query regarding Injection pump timing ? Will these need resetting once valve timing is changed ? I have no indication there is a problem with it.

once youve done cam you then need to turn engine to 13/14 degrees btdc on no1 on compression stroke both valves closed no4 valves on the rock ie partly open, and the check and set pump timing

Many thanks James.... All done.. Injection Pump timing was perfect (which would make sense as it was a recent reconditioned fit)... I had to take the cam sprocket off to align correctly and tension the valve timing chain so I now KNOW the timing must have been out....

Slight issue in that I appear to have binned the old fanbelt and the new one doesn't fit... Far too short.. does anyone have an alternate part number...563132 is what I have.

All fixed, man alive what chaos... the last fanbelt must have been for a bus or something as I had to move the bolts around..Anyway... So long story short previously I was spinning the injection pump around to try and move timing which had ZERO effect.. This was clearly as the valve timing was so far off..

Now I get NO SMOKE on tickover awesome.... When I put my foot down I get a fair amount of black smoke.... Setting the injection pump isn't marked (i.e where it goes once the spline is aligned) I moved it a little and smoke went to grey on tickover so at least I know I have made progress.

is it feasible the black smoke could be built up as the main timing was so far out it hasn't had a chance to clear with an open exhaust port..... It hasn't been run for such a long time.

black smoke is over fueling or too little air , if its only on hard acceleration or hard work uphill etc and then clears i wouldnt worry sounds ok
