ticking sound

was out green laning and got stuck in a field, had to get winched out, but when i was in the truck i must have armed the alarm then got out, the alarm went off so i put the key in the ignition and turned, the alarm went off, problem now is the landy won't start, when i turn the key it turns over but won 't start, i do hear a clicking sound from the passenger side dash, is this from the immobilizer? i can still lock the doors with the fob but can't start the engine, any suggestions? its a 1996 discovery

Sounds like the immobiliser relay has packed in, do a search here for it, there are some long posts, including how I fixed it on ours somewhere. 300tdi?

You could take a live wire from a local feed (starter), and stick it on the fuel shut off solenoid, engine should start then, then you know exaclty before you start taking things apart.

i am going to charge the battery up first, it might need to be replaced, not sure if it is causing the problem, when i first try and start the engine nothing happens, doesn't even turn over but if i wait a couple of seconds and try again it will turn over, talked to the rover dealership and the mechanic wasn't sure what was wrong, he told me he thinks the immobiliser works on the starter motor so it shouldn't turn over and he wants me to tow it to the dealership to have a look at it, i will charge the battery first and see what happens before i take it in but thanks for your advice, i will give it a shot as well

turned out to be the battery, had it on the trickle charger all day, put it back in and it starts, now there is a ticking sound from the engine!!!!!!! will it ever end?

Its a landrover so you already know the answer
