Thermostat

Do thermostat's either work or don't work ? Or do they become less effective over time ?

Reason I ask is looks like I'm replacing my water pump and don't know whether to replace the thermostat at the same time. I've heated it in a pan on the stove and it opens to about 4mm, is this about right for a 2.5na ?

Think the stat is working but for the cost of one I was thinking about reaching it anyway.

The fan has quite a bit of play in it. I was doing a coolant flush today and ran engine for an hour without stat opening. I removed stat but lower radiator hose was still alot cooler than top hose so don't think coolant is being pushed through. I have flushed rad clean and doesnt seem too bad so think the pump may be knackered !

if the pump was knackerd the engine should get hotter quicker if no water is being circulated

So it could be just the thermostat then ?

Not opening quick enough ?

on me rangy u could actually see on the temp guage when the stat opend as the temp guage would drop

The only time I've seen me temp gauge dropping recently was a couple of weeks ago on the plains when I was stuck !

I got the pump off today but can't see how it would circulate the water around the engine until the stat opens on the 2.5na.

There was quite a bit of play on the fan do going to replace pump anyway and it definately looks to have seen better days inside !

Stick a new pump on mate there cheap and not worth ****ing about with !! Get the stat out boil your kettle and pop your stat into the water it should open immediately and open fully ! If it's slow or doesn't open at all it's fubar!! But when you get your new stat test that as well before you fit it !!! I changed a stat last week ! Had three brand new ones from Amd before I got. One that actually worked !!!!! They had a large box full of **** !! Had no time to go elsewhere !!!!! Good luck !!!
