hi all our 2002 td5 disco auto was parked for two months (waiting for and autobox) we fitted the box this morning and it started up fine but when you rev it it puffs out white smoke and missfires it idles fine no missfire it only does it if you rev it ..any ideas what it could be

also the fuel filter was quite hot after we had it was running for a while waiting for the smoke to clear up

ok i did some more checking i unpluged the MAF and no change bled the fuel system a few times and it ran very good for about 1 min then it started acting up again so im guessing the fuel pump and not the injector and harness because it was reving very strong and no smoke no missfire but as a let off the pedal and tried to rev again it started to miss .
also it has a new boost controler so i ruled that out aswell

just bought some seals and washers for the injectors gonna try that and see what happens .because when i bleed the system it will work fine for a while and then start to miss and air returns in the system

Check your diesel filter is completely tight. Also read someplace that TD5 heads can develope a crack around the exhaust valves, mostly cylinder 5, where coolant might leak into the cylinder. When engine warms up the block expands and seals the crack. Coolant causes white smoke... But hope its just an air leak.

got some false hope today whan i changed the seals and washers it started up great reved smooth good response no smoke so i took it out for a test drive all was well for about 10 minutes then loss power wont rev past 2000 rpm some light smoke . and the fuel filter is still getting hot... so im fed up now not sure what to try next

I was told the fuel (including the tank) gets very hot on TD5's, there is even a fuel cooler that uses coolant from the engine, so i wouldnt worry about the fuel filter getting hot.

If its been sat a long time maybe the missing/white smoke is moisture in the fuel, try brimming the tank with new diesel.

Mine did this and it was screwed injectors has it ever overheated or had a cracked head/water loss?

never overheated all orignal parts

If its been sat a long time maybe the missing/white smoke is moisture in the fuel, try brimming the tank with new diesel.

i did fill it up and added a treatment ,i just cant understand it was working perfect until the autobox went .never missed never smoked nothing .could it be some wire or plug or sensor got damaged during the install ??

well ive been working on this for some itme now and its gotten better but still not working right .. ive changed the following parts injector seals and washers , new fuel filter & fuel pump , cheked and reseald the pressure regulator on the head ,the accelerator pedal , strange thing when i removed the engine temp sensor plug while it was missing it started to work great so i swaped it for one of another engine and then it worked for a little then started to miss again so i unpluged it again and it made no diffrence this time  also the aux air con fan is on constantly with air con on or off or egnine cold or hot its always on . my next step it to order a Nanocom from the uk and see whats up

A wild card but have the injectors been coded correctly, did they go back where they came from when you did the washers?

Im not up on things like this but im sure this was mentioned when mine was puffin smoke and a underpowered, search my posts there may be more ideas.

thanks everyone i found the problem the EGR valve butterfly was closing and blocking the intake causing the low power and smoke . i started it up this morning and just left it to idle until it started to act up while it was at idle i noticed the acuator for the EGR and thought if i was stuck so i moved it with a screwdriver and it was free but i noted the position it was in and later when it first started to act up i saw the leaver moved to the closed position when i removed the vaccum line to the acuator it instantly gained all its power so i took it out for a drive and it was smooth lots of power and no miss or smoke ..... BIG MATT i did put them back as they were ...
