Hmm, tough call. The 300 is easier to work on with no electronics, but the td5 is a nicer engine (faster and sounds nicer).

You might also have a better chance of getting a good td5 as 300s are getting on a bit now.

Personally I would get a td5.

depends on how much you have got to spend?
and what you want to do with it.
if you want a full blown off road monster then go for the 300 it'll put up with more abuse than a TD5.
if it's going to be a road car TD5 all the way much more civilized, also you'll get more for your money with a 300.
pro's and con's for both really buy the best your money will get you.

As said, either or, both are good.
The td5 is slightly more civilized, the 300 is easier to work on and less electronics.
That said I think the td5 is more hardy than we think, I've seen a couple swear by them now for comp challenges.

I have 6500 am not too bothered about the colour because I will probably change it to a grey or black and add a few goodies To it is there any specific year to avoid on td5s I've seen a special vehicles ones 2000 reg but don't know what a special vehicle is

I wouldn't say special vehicle is anything to worry about, will have just been built for a purpose.
Early td5's pre 2002 (ish) will be 10p
Late td5's post 2002 (ish) will be 15p
Early ones had a few issues with head dowls etc.. but I'd hope by now they've pretty much all been ironed out.

Haha, no the 10p and 15p is the engine type, both td5 but they changed it slightly to meet emissions I believe.
The ish is for the dates as obviously there's a bit of overlap, hence the ish bit.

HaHa sorry got a bit confused does it matter about the mileages or aslong as its hot service history that's the best you can do.

+1

Generally speaking the newer it is the better the technology but the crappier the quality.. a new Defender is a fine machine but would look like a cheap Chinese copy if you could park it next to a new Series..

I think I might go for the td5 by your comments I'll be on the roads through the week and off road of a weekend hopefully any tips what to look for when I am buying one it will be my first one

Yes, make sure the chassis/bulkhead is solid.
Take a hammer and give it a good wack all over, seller grumbles theirs a problem.
Usually get a look as if to say 'what the f*ck' though.
Theirs loads of stuff to look at, have a search about and theirs a complete buyers guide somewhere.
