It ran for an hour but they think the injectors need calibrating.......
An hour is quite a long time to run if the injectors are that far 'out of calibration' that they need to be sent to a dealer. And why send them to LR rather than someone who knows what they are talking about?
When it dies does it die suddenly or get progressively rougher until it gives up?
Does it restart immediately after it dies or does it need to cool down?
Do dodgy crank position sensors suffer more when they get hot? I defer to @sierrafery

Yeah the injector calibration is _not_ required.

Some simple checks might save a fair bit of dosh - ie is the injector loom oil logged. What are the injector idle balances like? (might need nanocom or similar for that)

If there's diesel in the oil then the injector washers and o-rings _must_ be renewed with GENUINE LR only items - this in itself will considerably impact how smoothly the engine runs.

It's extremely easy to knacker the head by forcing the injectors back into their ports incorrectly, the seats can be cracked - fingers crossed this hasn't happened.

The guys couldn't calibrate the injectors as the previous owner had apparently calibrated them to the max when replacing the pump last year.

This sounds odd... there are 2 things needed to ensure optimum injection on a TD5:

1) the adjusters need setting correctly on the rockers - with the lock nut slacked off they need to be wound fully in then back out 1 complete turn, then lock. This is done with the engine turned to the corresponding timing marks on the cam flange (just behind the cam sprocket), the timing marks line up with a lobe directly next to where the timing pin(not required) is inserted.
2) the codes printed on top of the injectors need to be programmed into the ECU (nanocom etc)

Yes all very strange! No calibration as such, maybe they meant injectors codes.
LR wont be able to anything unless they happen to have a proper injector tester.
Also LR will probably tell you "your injectors are toast buy new ones"!
You cant tweak/adjust the injectors, the codes are deliberately randomised to prevent it.
As Benneboy says check the setting for the lock nuts and get the codes checked.
But your problem is still a bit strange! Cant see why it would pack up after running for a while.

It just stopped after an hour. Not sure about the restart. When I say LR I mean an LR dealership with a repair centre about an hour from here. Problem with being in the middle of no-where is the local help is generic. The nearest English LR mechanic is about 4.5 hours away.

As markomate2 said "Also LR will probably tell you "your injectors are toast buy new ones"!". Yep they've come back and said after testing that all five are knackered. Could the previous owner have made the injector clearances to small when he was working on it? Could this damage the injectors to a point where all five would subsequently fail? I'm wondering if he's messed up somewhere doing the work himself thus his reason for selling it?
