The missus' TD4 Freelander has done this randomly ever since we got it, but sometimes it will go for weeks without a hitch and then it'll happen, then be fine for several more weeks.

It'll be going along fine and then without warning you can feel the power drop off, as in the engine stops pulling, followed by a surging of the whole car and a fair amount of smoke out the back. Nothing appears on the dash, no engine light or anything. Putting your foot down usually gets it going again but sometimes it'll have quite a bad episode in which it'll stall when pulling away, it will rev but will quickly die as soon as the clutch starts to bite. Revving while stopped in neutral while the fault is occurring results in a lumpy rev up until about 2000RPM where it'll smooth out.

Smoke doesn't seem to be uniform in colour I have seen it dense black as well as white/grey. Only seems to happen mainly when cruising or accelerating without too much throttle - give it a bit of go and keep the revs up and it seems fine, pulls very well. Pulls fine from lower revs too when it is not happening. Doesn't normally smoke at all.

Did it before and after I changed the oil/filter, fuel and air filters. I'm not really sure where to look next, faulty sensor or broken hose? I am aware of the VVT turbos sticking and causing a lack of low end power but its usually fine and it usually occurs when your moving, I don't think it has ever started doing it when stationary, unless it was already occurring - if that makes sense.

Has been its worst this weekend, laid it up for a journey it would have otherwise done and took the Defender instead it was so bad/frequent. Coolant temp/level was fine.

Any ideas of what to check? And is it likely to cause any damage being driven (not too much) with the fault? As I said it can be fine for weeks then it'll flare up for a day, and disappear for a while again.

Thanks. :)

Similar to what I had lumpy misfire upto about 2000rpm. Mine was a knackered No 1 injector just changed it Fri and all back to normal. No faults recorded. Was picked up on diagnostics (pro logic) at local independent

Thanks all for your help. I have suspected turbo hoses as they are very soft and look past it, I think that'll be the first port of call before moving onto other suggestions or hooking it up to a laptop.

Thanks :)
