It arrived today.... and it fitted!! Even retained my indicator cancel and steering lock function. Very pleased indeed.

Thanks again, Ratty. A pint or 2 to be had from me if ever our paths cross! :5bcheers2:

Nice one. Glad it worked out ok.:)

That looks good - can you put up a picture from the side ?
Can you still reach the indicators with your fingers ?

Yes, seems about the same distance, to be fair. Gap between either stalk and the steering wheel is 1.5 inches.

Ps, apologies for hijacking your thread!

That's OK

That looks a lot better than mine, with the Springalex boss the wheel (the same one as it happens) was around 4" from the stalks.

Even now I am having some issues, the indicator canceller doesn't work, possibly I have a faulty unit - a new one is being sent for me to compare.

The point of this (my) thread was to see if (a) there were others with the same problem (I have had a pm from 1 other) and (b) if it was worth me making 10 of the adaptors and offering them for sale.

Long and short - not worth making 10.

I'll get me coat .....

Glad it's helped you out in some way, anyway. :)

If I was to pick fault with anything, there'd be 2 (very minor) things:
1) The horn push is VERY stiff, but this is due to the newness of the rubber cover - the button itself underneath is fine.
2) Could do with some sort of cover to sit behind the steering wheel, as the smaller wheel doesn't quite cover the exposed ignition cowling, as you can see in the 1st pic.

Hi,

At last I've found someone in the UK with the same problem I'm having. :)
Sorry its taken this long to find your post.
I've been living with a steering wheel too far from the controls since 2011!!!!!!!!!!
I've got a 36 spline column/shaft.
Question:
Why cant the base that's secured with the nut be taped and shorter bolts used to secure the wheel directly to that?
I've also pondered with shortening the steering shaft, getting rid of the steering lock, god knows why its there in the first place.
Re-locating the ignition barrel and using a push button starter aka those very expensive sports cars that re-introduced it even thou so many vehicles from pre and early post war had them.
With a shorter column/shaft and the smaller wheel you would get enough room for even my gut behind the wheel LOL:eek:
Could you please let me know the cost of your short boss and if possible postage to Guernsey, Channel Islands.
Cheers:tea:

PS

I couldn't afford or more like it wouldn't pay stupid amounts of money for a Momo steering wheel so i bought what looks identical and works, it turns the steering, a Mountney M range wheel.

Hi

I didn't make any in the end as no-one (said they) wanted one. I think you need to boss to give a bit of height - I wanted to get the wheel at about the same height as original and to do that I needed to design a boss. The sprigalex boss is designed to collapse in the event of you smashing into it if you should have an accident. The boss I designed didn't have that ability so it's perhaps not as safe....

I have an engineering drawing somewhere, if you drop me a pm i'll sent it you and you can get an engineering firm to make you one.

If you know someone who is handy with a lath it's not that difficult.

Hi there,
I would love to buy one of these short bosses. I tried the standard and as you said it
Was impossible to reach the stalks.
Mine is a December 2002 model and I will check the splines on wednesday.
How much do you charge and which steering wheels fit?
Many thanks
Richard

Hi Richard

I didn't make any to sell in the end as no-one contacted me. Obviously not true now as you are the 2nd :) in 2 years ... :cool2:

Making 1 or 2 isn't cost effective the price only gets reasonable after 25 or so. If you PM me i'll send you an engineering drawing.
