Bugger - I found another job to add to the list on the Disco.

After a bit of a search on here, I think it may be the steering box output shaft seal?

I also read up on Rave to see what's involved in replacing it.

What should I use to release the ball joint from the drop arm?
Will an ordinary puller do for removing the drop arm from the box?

Are they bastards to get off, & should I even be trying to do it myself?

Thanks.

Yes an ordinary heavy duty trade quality two leg puller, Rave shows the type required. The arm is will be on tight, if it is the original and fitted by the factory.
If the seal is faulty then no doubt the shaft is worn...maybe.
Take to steering box to a garage that has the tools, no point buying a puller that will cost £80 £100 or more if you only going to use it once.

NOT a ball joint splitter as your link.

ok thanks. Sounds like I would be able to get it out of the car, but will have to take it to the garage to get the drop arm off the steering box.

I've only got an el cheapo three arm puller anyway..

had same problem with disco2,put 2 bottles of "Lucas power steering stop leak" cost about £20,been in 2 yrs now and passed 2 M.O.Ts (www LUCASoil.com.

bottom seal can be done on the vehicle if drop arm can be removed , its held by a taper like ball joints so it can be removed with a very hard hit with large lump hammer and drift pullers help
