After a mint day of playin in the s111, I encouterd a bit of trouble with the starter motor, by trouble I mean fire!! No bull, it was on fire!! I think it totaly fooked! Managed to get goin by bumping it, so need to put in a new one,
anyone kno if it's a difficult job, shouldn't be, just asking! Has anything likethis happend to any1 before

cheers

J

Easy enough to remove but not the easiest to access (it's a landy, isn't it?) Has the wiring to the starter burnt out or is it the motor itself?

Pretty sure it's the whole motor, but the live wire seems to be burnt aswell! My first breakdown in the Landy, quite exciting really!

I couldn't see any solenoid atall! Think it might be an inertia starter! Should be easy enough to fix! Are they expensive 2nd hand?

The solenoid is either attached to the starter or it's bolted to the wing near the battery - follow the thick red wire from the battery, if it goes via a thingy on the way to the starter that's the solenoid. If it goes to a lump on the top of the starter that's the solenoid and you'll need a different starter. I think it depends what engine you have. New/recon units are about £100 if i remember right.

turned it over 2 or three times.

i have been trying to change the motor yesterday and today. All bolts are off, all wires disconnected, but i cant pull it out. It seems to be stuck on with super strong metal glue that is so hard to get off!!! And my hands are bloody freezing!

Any ideas as to why i cant get it out? Is there more than 2 bolts? do i have to twist it,
Thought id be done in a couple of hours!!

if its the remote mounted solenoid, which it sounds to be, theres only 2 bolts.
if its an early 90 / 110 2.5 petrol, they have 3 bolts and the solenoid mounted on the starter.
give the arse end of it a wollop with a lump of 3x2 and it should drop out.

Thank for the reply, no such luck, can't get a hammer in no room to do anything! I can't understand why it's bein such a pain, it's an '84 series 3 petrol, no solenoid on the motor! I was hoping to be done by the weekend.

Thanks

not directly with the hammer!
put the wood between ungine and wing, and the bit that sticks out, wollop that.
i actually meant just use the wood in the other reply, but if you feel the need to hammer as well, then try it.
