Hi I wonder if anybody could offer some advice. My '83 petrol series 3 has been laid up for about 3 months, now with a recharged battery it will start but only if the key is held fully on with the starter spinning. As soon as you release pressure on the key it dies. There are no lights coming on when you turn the key the first 3 steps. Any ideas?

Pull off the connectors at the back of the switch and then replace (one at a time) to make sure they're tight and making good contact. You could try (with the battery disconnected) turning the key backwards and forwards with a squirt of switchcleaner into the back of the switch in an attempt to clean off the contacts but you'll probably find the only reliable cure is a new switch.
