Hi, this is my first post so apologise for any issues.

Recently bought a 1995 model (reg'd in 93) RRC 300TDI vogue, and trying to get it back to fully restored, spent an entire afternoon watching blinking ABS lights and playing with EAS unlock. Anyway it's a soft dash and has two airbags, one in the dash and steering wheel. However the SRS doesn't light up on ignition, so pulled the instrument cluster out and hidden behind the tach are simply 4 metal pins in two pairs marked SRS1 and SRS 2, however no bulb holders or bulbs. I am left with 3 assumptions:

1. This model never had an SRS light, although everything I have in terms of literature says it should.
2. The bulbs and any holder had been removed.
3. The cluster printed circuit has been swapped for a non SRS model but that seems a long shot.

Further I can't seem to locate the SRS bulb or holder in the RRC parts catalogue or on any suppliers website so no idea where to buy a new one.

Also I have read various views on how long Airbags should last, anything from 10-20 years would like to hear anyones views?

Any help would be most appreciated, thanks in advance.

Cliff

It's customary to post on 'introduce yourself' before seeking advice here but welcome to the forum. Sorry I can't help you myself but am sure others will be able to.

Would think if it has bags fitted at some stage it would also have had SRS warning lamps. Maybe a problem at MOT time depending on how pedantic the tester is.

How can a 95 rrc be registered in 93. Surely it must be at best a 93 rrc. Check vin and see what you have. Might be an early rrc with later bits added.

Or as DVSA would say - an MOT Tester doing his/her job properly and refering to MOT Testers Manual Section 5.4 ;)

To FAIL (Reason For Refusal) an SRS Lamp has to indicate a fault

Read the above carefully and a "non-illuminating" SRS Lamp is not a valid RFR but if the vehicle is known to be supplied originally with an SRS system then it is a Pass and Advise if the SRS Lamp does not illuminate at any time especially during start-up

As far as i am aware incorrect operation is a reason for refusal. On ignition SRS should light, do it's checks and then go out. If it does not then it is a fail. A warning lamp indicating a fault is also a fail.

Just bring it to my mate, he would pass a wheel barrow as long as the handles have safety rubbers on

That is a whole reason I would NOT go to your mate! :eek:

Without trying to sound like an elfan asshat, I am happy for my car to fail a test because it means the tester is doing his job and I get to fix something that may hurt or even kill me or worse, others :(

Tell your mate he needs to either quit or take others safety seriously...after all, wheelbarrows can be dangerous o_O

:D

Nothing airy fairy

Q. Does SRS lamp indicate a fault ?

Yes = FAIL

No = Pass

It used to be

Q. Does SRS Lamp follow the correct self-test procedure ?

Yes = Pass

No = Fail

On the RRC and the P38 if the SRS light does not come on and go out, that indicates a fault. So it should be a fail. That is the reason they have twin bulbs as a fail safe, if the primary indicator fails the other stays illuminated. Other vehicles may vary As i said open to interpretation on these vehicles at least. .

You can interpret the MOT Inspection Manual any way you like but if the SRS Lamp does not illuminate then it cannot INDICATE a fault and is a PASS

EG:- If I turn right whilst driving and do not use my turn signals then I am not "indicating" my intention to turn right ;)

A lamp not illuminating and following correct procedure used to be a FAIL

Also an SRS Lamp that stays illuminated is a FAIL

I do not write the Manual and if you feel it is Airy Fairy then feel free to contact DVSA as they are the ones who send out the manual for Testers to use

The amendment was because of the EU directive http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/en/TXT/?uri=CELEX:52012PC0380 which was introduced to the UK MOT test to bring the UK into alignment with the EU system
