Looking for some replacement CD sound system advice in a 1995 300tdi
It's got the original Landrover radio cassette and speakers with controls on the dash and would like to know the best method of upgrading this to a CD??? As in put a Land rover cd charger under seat? Are the necessary wires already there? Rip out old cassette unit, replace with CD unit, will dash buttons still work. And finally although original speakers are not bad any replacement advice appreciated

Thanks in advance.

Jason

I have a 1996 300tdi with factory fitted radio. I found a lead for connecting a CD stacker already provided under the drivers seat.

I will go and have a look for that.Do you know If it has to be a Land Rover stacker or will any make fit/work?

Hey mate how you doing I have just taken my old cd changer out if you lookin for one.....it should fit the factory unit you have in there now....I changed my head unit to a jvc unit which has the facility for dash mounted controls....but I wish I had kept the old unit because the sub speakers in the rear door dont work and all sounds a bit tinny but im sure I will be able to sort that out.....hopefully...cheers Rog...xx

Mine is landrover badged but made by pioneer. I believe a number of different manufacturers made audio equip for landrover and they are not interchangable.

My 97 300tdi has the LR radio cassette with CD changer under the drivers seat and dash controls. I wanted to fit a standard radio/CD but found that the connectors weren't right. This is because the system uses a seperate amplifier hidden behind the passenger glove box. The connector that usually goes to the speakers goes to the dash swiches instead. To get the speakers to work I had to buy a new socket (£10.00) and connect the wires to the speaker leads comming out of the amplifier. The rear door speakers don't work because they use a crossover inside the amp. You might consider getting a radio with USB socket and put your CD's onto a mem stick.

Thanks a lot for all the info. The original system is not bad and don't want to prat around with it if possible.
"Donboon" You have just given me an idea, what about getting an I-pod (or equivalent) that plugs into cig-lighter and then tuning radio in to I-pod.Don't know how it works exactly but knew of a mate that did that in his motor. Then I can put all mi disks in the I-pod-Job done!
So question is what do you need so that you can tune your radio to receive from I-pod?

What you need is a high to low level speaker converter, there several different types/designs around.

This retains the use of the subs in the rear door with an aftermarket head unit.

The converter is wired into the speaker wires on an aftermarket head unit then the rear door subwoofer connector is then plugged into the converter to retain the use of the rear door subwoofers.

to use an personal cd payer or even better a mp3 player you could use one of these adapters:

you can also buy kits with a lead to power your cd player from the cig lighter socket.

Although some aftermarket units do have RCA inputs for such players all you need then is a jack to RCA lead.

I had a Sony Xplod fitted by Halfords last month, they supplied the dash control connection leads and I supplied the sub woofer connection lead. I have fully working sub woofer and dash controls, with a really nice CD flip face stereo, all for nothing! :D

They originally fitted a mobile telephone Prowave blue tooth kit to my original Disco stereo (only a tape/radio unit) but their heavy handed technician broke the front facia attachment clips and one of the side clips, so after a bit of remonstrating, they agreed to replace the unit. First they gave me the Sony Xplod base model, then realised it didn't have the connectors for the dash controls, so they had to upgrade me to the next model, which did have the connectors! So, I now have a really nice CD stereo with bluetooth AND a front jack point for MPEG, watchamakallits.

I found one on Ebay for sale, if anyone is interested, checvk out auction number 170041243956

Wire that in under dash some where and then plug I-pod,MP3 or what ever into that?

Am I correct?
:D Found a black and red wire under my drivers seat, but my kenwood changer wont fit it?can i buy an adaptor for this or is it a complete new lead to the OE head unit:confused:

You will have to look at the back of your Head unit to see if there is a connection socket for a CD changer first (thats if you are keeping the original).
If so you will need to get the lead that fits and a Changer to go with it.

Many types out there so be carefuel Pal

Well that's sorted a few things out-Cheers:)
So after sorting the rear door woofers out what about retaining the dash switches etc on an after market head unit? or is that asking too much????
The more I think about it the better it would be to change the system for a mp3 radio jobby to avoid dangly wires and triple adaptors coming out of the ciggy lighter! Also saves you having to go and get yeh favourite CD out of the car late at night when it's peeing it down!

Jason, you've got it mate. That's what I've done, A decent after market USB or iPod radio and just scotch gripped it to the speaker leads via a new connector. I can put the original unit back with no difficulty.
