as i always remove the cat on any diesel car i own i was interested to look into new mot regs regarding missing cats and failing the mot.
i had a brief conversation with an mot tester at a garage i used to work at and he said nothing to do with diesel only petrols.
so i thought thats good i can get on with removing mine on the rangie then a conversation with wammers prompted me to read the mot manual and i still thought it was fine as a diesel has a particulate filter not a cat but i was corrected that some are still refered to by manufacturers as cats.
so put doubts in my mind so popped into another garage i used to work at for a second opinion and he confirmed that on a diesel it is NOT a fail and showed me the paperwork from the ministry with new test items and it states missing cats only a fail on vehicles that require a full cat test, which a diesel does not have it only has a smoke check.
so removing the cat or dpf is NOT A FAIL on the mot. :)

Unless it is caught by the new rule forbidding modifications. Leave it in place and shove a pipe through the middle and you will be OK, cut the bugger out and if it's spotted it should fail:(

No it won't, FFS how many more of these "new MOT" threads are we going to have. Pack it in with the scare stories and do a search, there are MOT testers on here that have been on the update training and given us the facts.

i second that! information sourced from 2 independent garages and 2 different mot testers confirmed. vosa updates paperwork shown to me whilst i was there cant get anymore proof than that!

The NEW MOT regs demanded by the EU to standardise European MOT testing are on going, they are not due to be fully implimented until 2014. There is lots of stuff in them that has not been added this time for various reasons. However it more than likely will be, in or before 2014. If they follow the rules now being used in Spain for instance, some people over here maybe in for a massive shock.

The flip side of that is Sweden. When i first rolled up with my Cherokee I was worried that it might not pass. Then I saw the state of the cars waiting in the lines next to me. One, an old Saab, had half the front wing missing with rust and it passed. Mine, which had a burst steering pump hose and was leaking fluid every time it was on full lock passed without so much as blink of the eye.
I guess a few countries are in for a shock or maybe they won't be as pedantic as the UK when it comes to applying them.

That's about the size of it. Countries like France demand new rules then ignore them. But knowing how bloody stupid our government are, we will adopt ALL of them rigoursly. Gives them a chance to remove older cars from the road. Bet money they will take it. We must be green you know. After all we are a world leader in CO2 taxation, even though we in world terms produce very little, we must show a good example and reduce emissions, even though it costs us dearly in production and taxes, so all the countries that make all the right noises, but don't really give a ****, can carry on as normal.

The MOT is pretty strict as far as mods are concerned in France too, although the 80 year old farmer with his 50 year old Deux Cheveau is likely to get passed regardless of condition as long as the brakes work, very pragmatic the French;)

How do you think a P38 on coil springs would fare?

My guess is it would fail, my mates van failed just on the load ratings of the tyres. Like the UK, some places are more strict than others. I've got 3 vehicles through with UK headlights after I modded the beam pattern to resemble LHD, but when the tester changed I had a hell of an argument with the new guy before he passed the P38, only got away with it as it had passed the previous time.
Personally I think all HID conversions should be banned. Unless the reflectors are designed for HID's they always cause dazzle to oncoming traffic and if you can't see with the standard lights at the speed a P38 will go then you shouldn't have a licence:rolleyes:

I totally agree about HID they should be banned, period. Even vehicles fitted with them as standard are an absolute menace, you can be blinded for several seconds by them. Very dangerous pieces of kit indeed.

[sarcasm]But who cares about other road users? Your car looks cool with HIDs and ultra bright 100% brighter than normal fog lights on all of the time. I mean, why else would they fit fog lights to cars if you can't run them all of the time? It makes the car look awesome.[/sarcasm]

It also becomes confusing when it comes to VAG cars as when you have fog lights on it stops indicators working and will just turn off the opposite foglight to the direction you're turning. What sort of blithering idiot at VAG thought that was a good idea?

hi im an authorised examiner and mot tester and as of the 1st of january 2012 a car that was originally fitted with a cat at maufacture wether petrol or diesl which vosa do not specify is presented for an mot with the cat missing is a fail so before removing the cat i would ring your local vosa office just in case the other way would be is to remove cat knockout all internals and replace then it loock like cat still there but with no restrictions
