Hi all,
looking into the chip / reflash route on my Td5.
One thing Ive noticed it there doesnt seem to be much difference between a chip upgrade or a reflash. Is this right or have I grabbed the wrong end of the stick?? Does a reflash with Autologic really cost £300 or are the "tuners" making a load of cash for just loading a new map? What prices did people pay for their reflash?

Everything to do with ECUs is a rip-off.

They know we need them to do it.

Many cars are programmed to give grief until the driver takes it to a dealer for another rip-off.

It's another reason why our Landies are so good to have. You just need a few hammers and several cans of oil.

it all depends on what year you disco is, i tried a couple of the plug in boxes that fool the ecu into thinking it should do something it shouldn't but all i got was black smoke and increased MPG

I have owned and modified 3 TD5 discoveries and have found Bell Auto services near york to be the most helpful and reliable, pete flashed the ECU with a custom map taylor made for my engine, he spen nearly 2 hours on road tests setting the map up to match my driving style and to match the caracteristics of my engine. This individual approach is not normally done by some of the other chip tuners, all they do is drop a map on to your ecu which they say will be best for your car, but in practice we all know that every engine is different.

My TD5 is now running at about 19psi of boost i get no black smoke and get on average about 26MPG i drive the car hard and to date with 69000 miles on the clock it still uses no oil between services.

if you want to get rid of that of the flat spot and get a bit more MPG then give pete at bellauto a call

Its on a 51 plate so an '01 model i guess.
From reading on different sites I understand its '02 onwards with the re-writeable chip? How do I find out which one I have?
I need to weigh up the benefits of an extra 25 bhp for what looks like £450.
I have to tow 2.5 tonnes 300miles next week, maybe I will see how it goes compared to my old pickup.
FiL has a 4x4 company, and has autologic system, but apparently all you do is call them with the ecu number and they then give you a code to punch into the machine. Seems a little expencive for just a few minutes work!
If it does need the chip then I'd assume its even more expencive?

Earlier TD5's had a ROM memory; That's a Read Only Memory.
newer ones had a PROM memeory: That's Programable Read Only Memory

The chip is only flashable if it is PROM, in my case it was ROM and had to be chopped out and a PROM soldered into the ECU in it's place.
Try to stear away from the plug in boxes as generally they fool the ECU into different mappings by reducing/increasing the feedback from the sensors

JE Engineering did the job for me for £260
slightly incresed fuel consumption but a much stronger engine on the motorway, inclines and acceleration.

Well worth the money!

A month ago I met a LandyZoner at Tebay.
I was in my TD5, towing a four-wheel trailer.
TD5 weighs nearly 2.5 tonnes, trailer weighs a tonne.
Then we put a Disco 200tdi on the trailer, adding more than two more tonnes.

Total all up gross weight now near enough six tonnes.

Drove 150+ home at 55 mph on cruise control, using 5th gear most of the time, 4th on gradients. No problem. Impressive even. Fuel consumption was very good.

Fitted cruise today oddly enough. Works really well!
Charles, your Td5, is it chipped?
I like the price or the JE, but its a bit of a journey for me, Im down on the south coast.
Im interested to see just how it copes compared to my old truck though the LR has a much nicer ride and more toys!

TD5 Alive do a postal service... send them your ECU and they send it back a couple of days later..

Cruise control is superb and coupled with the chip makes for a truley relaxing drive. I did about 3000 miles over the summer on the French motorways and over the Pyrenees about 60% of that driving was on the cruise control. Those long extended climbs of the french motorways were munched away by having the performance chip!

Really, its how the TD5 should have been out of the factory and why they didn't fit the cruise control as standard for the sake of £40 parts is rubbish!
