Hi, Like a few people I am trying to find out the cause of noise from the O/S rear drive on my Freelander 1 TD4 with auto box. It's a 2005 and just reached 40k miles on the clock. The noise, I would describe as rotational and my first thoughts were the rear O/S wheel bearing.
Work done so far:
Jacked up both rear wheels and they turned freely while the front ones were on the ground.
New O/S rear wheel bearing fitted.
4 new tyres all round of the same type with the front at 30psi and the rear 32psi.
Front and back bearings replaced which hold the VCU in place.
I then pulled back the boot of the outer drive shaft and packed with CV grease. This quietened the noise a lot for a couple of days.
So a new outer drive shaft was fitted.
The rear diff had the oil replaced at the same time. (no signs of contam in the drained oil).
Still the noise persists, it's driving me nuts plus the cost is ongoing.
The garage now think it COULD be the diff.
The only clue is how quiet it went when the outer drive shaft was packed with grease.
Has anyone got any ideas before I push the bag of sh*t off the nearest cliff.

why 32 in the rear are you carring extra weight have you looked at the brakes I had a spring that broke and made a dredfull noise

The tyre pressures were all 30psi but I thought I would put a couple of extra psi in the back to see if anything quietened down with the rear wheels travelling slower than the front. (in theory).
It's not a dreadful noise just irritating when you're driving along.
