Hi. I’m new here, having recently joined following the purchase of a ’99 TD5 ES. It is in excellent condition, appears to have been well cared for and has a FSH. One or two niggles to sort out though, minor leak to front sun roof – if it stops raining long enough this weekend I will drop the front part of the headlining and see what’s going on and intermittently sluggish front central locking. Of more concern is a rattle that’s just started. Sounds more like something resonating when engine lightly loaded at 2000 – 2500 rpm. Take foot off loud pedal and noise stops, when auto changes up noise stops, pressing pedal further down the noise stops. It is definitely not normal diesel engine din! Doesn’t sound like it is the engine actually but from the driver’s seat sounds like it is coming from front left of engine bay. Can’t really hear it with the windows open either. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hi there,

Does it have ACE? One of the things to do when servicing a car with ACE is to check the valve block on the side of the chassis under the drivers door. Have a look behind it in the small gap between the block and the chassis rail. Stones can be trapped between here and cause vibrations/resonance noises. Not had it myself but it seems that it can happen.

Regards

Sun roofs leak on Discos its just a fact of life !!! leaking sunroofs must be the most common complaint.I just duck taped mine and it stopped all leaks yes you can not use the sun roof but who cares anyway you have climate control.

I've checked everything and still have no idea what it is. Could it be coming from the gearbox? It isn't getting any worse, I think the solution is to just turn the radio up!

It's taken two and a half years but I've at last discovered what the noise is. It is the driver's side of the acoustic cover over the engine resonating. The fixing bolt is done up tight but the shoulder on the bolt sits against the captive nut without tensioning anything, so the whole bolt/captive nut arrangement is still able to move a bit. The answer was to put a number of washers under the head of the bolt to actually tighten the acoustic cover against the plate that holds the captive nut. For the first time since I've owned the vehicle I have no rattle!

What about u sunrufs???

lovely summer, so you will of really used them (lol)
have you taken em right out and resealed em properly yet, as that is the onlY real solution,:D

Sunroof problem only happened once when car was parked across a slight slope. Haven't parked that way since and have never had another drip!

I don't use the sunroofs. Never have in any car that I've owned. I don't like the sun shining in through a hole in the roof! I have had convertibles and that is fine but sunroofs just make a noise and I can't be bothered with them. I have never opened mine since buying the Disco two and a half years ago and don't even know if they even work! I have the mini blinds pulled across to blank them out.
