Hi all. About 2 months ago we noticed the FNS tire on the other halves D1 was wearing on the outside only. I first thought it was tracking out, sent her to tire place to get it checked, and they said no all was fine, just a duff tire or going round too many roundabouts(?).
Then about a week ago she pulled up to find a large amount of oil on the wheel. I traced this back to the ball joint seal leaking a lot. Ok, i'll change that when i get time....
Today we noticed one loud knock each time when more than half lock is used turning. The knock is coming from that corner.
I first assumed the tire wear was worn bushes, as we changed all the suspension last summer. Then i figured the knackered seal could be same thing, getting worse. Now i'm wondering if I'm on the right track with the knocking sounding more like something is loose. Any ideas? Or has anyone had this before? Its a '95 300tdi. Cheers.

Could be your swivel bearings/joint. If the seals away there's a posibility something has broken or causing the wheel to sit at a funny angle. Try jacking the car up and check for play In the wheel at the 12-6 positions and 3-9 positions. You could also get someone to look underneath for movement while your doing this.

Cheers.

Just spoke to a (sort of) mechanic mate, and we cam to the same conclusion. Bugger. Ok, still drivable? or not really? Need to get little one to school for the next week before I can take it apart.

You should be able to get it done between 9 and 3pm. Or between 3 and 6pm. Its not a hugely complicated job. Look for threads on here, or Mr Haynes book.

Normally that wouldn't be a problem, but I'm in the middle of re-building my work shop at my mums stables so i can work in the dry, and all my tools are packed in crates there, not here. So i need the workshop finished and up and running. That coupled with the crazy hours I'm working this week and next to cover, I'm not going to get a chance till the end of next week. Thats why it needs to last. And I cant afford to put into a garage. I've already done a replacement swivel on the other side as the ball had rusted, so I know how too. Just cant right now!
