Hi to all,

My (2005) freelander td4 is drinking fuel like no tomorrow. I understand that they generally aren't the best on fuel but, less than 150 miles per half of tank can't b right surely.

It also seems to be having problems with power at 70 mph and engine management light comes on. Any ideas???

half tank be about 30 ltr ..
that works out to 22 mpg aprox ..
not good at all for a td4 ..

read the sticky thread at top ..
http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/td4-lack-power-70mph-fixed-77147.html

it Might be related ..
i.e. If the turbo is not operating correctly mpg would suffer i imagine ..
but would also expect black smoke as well ..

could easily be another reason .. td4 fault diagnosis

Not much info to go on here -

Where to start?

Apart from the above mentioned sticky ...... you need to be able to tick off these as being OK:

Air Filter.
Fuel Filter
MAF
pcv
EGR
Turbo Hoses

How long have you had this vehicle?
Did it ever give normal mpg?
Service history - who did it?

Also which half a tank? Full to 1/2? 3/4 to 1/4? or 1/2 to Empty?
The first half tank takes forever and then the second half just seems to disappear pretty quick!
The guage is only an approx indicator.
The only way to accurately determine fuel consumption is to brim the tank, then after the next fill to the brim, do your sums.

Sorry if I seem to be giving you questions rather than answers, but I and others would need more info to get to the bottom of this.

I get 38ish mpg around town and short journeys, but 43 is easily obtainable on a long motorway trip.

Singvogel.

Singvogel, hello mate,

I've only had it happen today, it was 1/2 to empty, I'm aware about the last half of the tank going quicker than the first half, as for the check list not checked any yet as the weather is Tonk and its pitch black, had the motor just over 2weeks, and the first tank of fuel I managed 628 miles, I've had similar symptoms on my old mk4 Astra and that was egr valve, after a soak in some petrol it cured it good as new.

Cheers for the assistance pal. :)

628 miles!!!!!

How the hell did you get that many???

you must sit at 57 Mph all day long???

just a quick check to see if you haven't got the same problem i am wrestling with. My fuel consumption dropped off, gradually at first but eventually stopped the engine running. The problem is that i have a failing gasket on my high pressure fuel pump (the one under the oil filter).
The initial signs are grubby/oily lower part of the engine, due to diesel being dispersed around the underside of the bonnet. If you do have that, the best way to find out is to take all the plastic engine parts off of the top (including inlet manifold) so the top of the pump is visible. Get someone else to rev the engine whilst you monitor it - if this is the problem it will be obvious.
i hope i,ve just wasted my time, as it,s a pig of a job to replace n not cheap.

Any further clues from you can help narrow the probable causes . Good luck!

I'm amazed too ... ... new calculator battery required .. .. and a check of the figures methinks.

Just worked it out..

Tank capacity 59 liters

Brim to Brim

628 Miles would be 48.39 Mpg
using 55 litres would be almost 52 Mpg

Not entirely impossible I suppose,
but not somewhere I will ever get to doing 5 mile trips..

I am nearer 23-25 Mpg..

If you are only getting that out of a diesel? i'm sticking to my V6 as I average 24 mpg on my daily Cornish A and B road commute!!

Cheers pal gunna gv it a look at tomorrow ;)

I've just worked out the figures for my 04 TD4 Auto and I'm getting 28mpg, my daily commute is around 45 miles with a fair amount of stop start driving especially on the way home. I would have thought it would be better than that though…

Right well iv cleaned the air filter and housing, cleaned the maf and cleaned all sensors I can see, see how we get on with that as I have a 140 mile round trip (mainly motorway miles) to take my son back this evening.

Air filter was fairly dirty (banged off and blew out with my air rifle filling cylinder).

Will keep u posted how I got on when I'm back

the real only way to check your milelage per gallon it to brim it and then drive it and then brim it again but wait until your tank is nearly empty to take in town and country and motorway driveing that if you can aford to fill it
