HI all

Since its gotten cold my TD4 has developed a power loss most noticable in 5th gear and when i try and accelerate hard i hear a low drone that dissappears when you leave back the throttle. Its beeen grand all summer but now its annoying and the drone is worrying,seems like the engine is struggling for power.
any help thanks folks ?

its more since the weather got cold more than the engine being cold.i have a 40 min drive to work that has a 20mile motorway trip and it does it on that when im passing people . .. . . or trying to anyway

is the 'drone' noise definitely coming from the engine ?

just wondered if there's some added friction in the drivetrain somewhere ..
e.g. a rear brake dragging .. or similar ..
i guess you could check to see if a wheel is getting hotter than normal

( although i'd guess you'd notice that in most of the gears .. maybe .. )

speculating that some materials shrink a bit in colder temps ..
or moving components may bind up ..
i.e. in parts of the vehicle outside the heat of the engine bay ..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
as far as the engine be concerned .. the ecu should register denser colder air in colder temps .. .. via the air intake temp sensor which on older models i think is part of the maf sensor circuitry .. and a separate sensor on later models ..
i.e. the colder air inflow should increase the amount of fuel injected .. and power usually feels like there's more of it ..
if the air-intake temp sensor is faulty .. it can cause less fuel to be injected .. or .. too much fuel to be injected ..
so no dashboard engine warning light illuminates when trying to accelerate ?
I was overtaken on the A64 today by a coach! Couldn't give a monkey's though, tortoise and hare spring to mind, given up on the thought of passing people.
ya thats been sorted. i always suspected a dodgy maf but the mechanic said it was fine but it just seems a coincidence and i dont like those
Never worked on a diesel Freelander but I have on Chevy vans. Check to see that the airfilter hoses and everything to do with the air delivery is sealed. That drone you hear can be from a not properly seated intake. I had it once in a chevy E-350 van and it was so loud you couldn't talk in the cab. All it was was the seal around the base of the filter housing was not seated correctly after it was serviced. (by me :rolleyes:)
