Poor starting

This may sound obvious, but are your battery terminals nice and tight? Mine decided not to start last Sunday, our first really cold morning, and my neighbour gave me a jump start. A quick check found the -ve terminal as loose as a very loose thing. 13mm spanner, soon sorted.

Ok guys and gals we are getting there.

Caused turned out to be a timing issue with the injector pump, believed to be "possiably" caused by the garage that did the timing belt, something about un-doing the centre bolt of the injector rather than some other bolts.

Was running perfect for the past week, and then on Boxing Day.

It stopped dead 300 yards away from my home, cause is however that the injector pump fuse keeps blowing.

Guess its a case of looking at wires all around the injector pump. If anyone has any other thoughts on when to check also would be great, planning to do this on the next dry day, whenever that will be.

Cheers

Nigel

I have a similar issue, but it doesnt matter if mine is cold or warm! We have done the glow plugs and bought a top of the range battery. Still have a service to do on it though, however I have no smoke ever which is quite nice as my last one used to give a bit of a cloud on a cold start. I have to have my foot approx half way down on the accelerator and it still takes a couple of tries. I thought its just because this one is automatic. My last one was manual gearbox and strated first turn of the key even when it hadnt been moved for a week in the freezing cold??

The Discos with EDC pumps are well known to be bad starters in the cold and if you do a search there is a mod you can do with a resistor that advances the timing. If i remember rightly it fools the ECU into thinking it is colder than it really is and so altering the pump to suit the colder temp.
Im sure that if im wrong i will soon know about it!

Bit of an update.

Had a diagnostic test done on the disco, turns out that the needle lift on the number 4 injector has stopped working.

Being that mine is an auto, the injector with the wire has been discontinued and are near impossible to get hold of :(

This is an interesting thread, my Auto hot or cold weather takes a while in the morning to get going, after it is warm its really quick to start, I have done the glow plugs, new battery and leak off pipes, its better than last year but still not great.

On 1st start there's a little smoke out the back as well.
