I seem to have a misfire on my D2 and have been advised by my LPG mechanic to change the plug leads. Hawkeye is telling me there is a problem with the O2 sensor bank 2 and misfires on cylinders 2,4,6 & 8 have been logged.
I plan to change the sensor in the very near future and have looked into changing the plug leads. However access is severely restricted between the block and the bulkhead where the coil packs are. Rave tells me to remove the plenum chamber but because of the LPG kit sitting on top I am reluctant to do this. I am considering removing the two front engine mounts and lowering the front of the engine with a jack to try to increase the clearance but I am concerned about damage to the torque convertor/gearbox input shafts.
Has anybody had any experience with this job and if so how did you overcome this problem?
Many thanks for any thoughts, advice or other input.

I have done it twice. First the by the book including removing the LPG bits to do it.

Unfortunately I had a bad lead and problems again after 2 months. I had a mix of britpart and some other ones. Managed to swap out the leads that time without removing anything. You need a big or slightly bent screw driver to pop the leads off the coil. And the you can just get your hands down and do it

Make sure the engine is cold! And expect to loose a little skin of your knuckles :)

After about 6 months I then had a coil problem so had to have it all off again anyway! I put magnecor leads on when I changed the coil packs. So actually that's 3 times I have done the job!

Cheers Ben, I guessed I would lose some skin. Do you find any improvment with the Magnecor leads? The claims they make sound good, but other people dismiss this as advertising hype and say that OE leads are just as good. I would hate to spend £100 on leads to find out that £40 leads are just as good!

It was only 8k miles ago I put them on so a bit early to say. Mind you the Britpart ones failed after 3k so there you go.

When I spoke to the Landrover main dealer they tried to sell me magnecor as did the Indi. So I bought them direct. Figured as I was doing the lot I might as well fit and forget (hopefully)

RPI's website claim 10-20% increase in fuel economy as well as other benefits. I would have thought this would be immediately noticeable although the idea of fit and forget on a job this awkward is a benefit in its self.

Hi...done this one too and yes you will lose some skin.....the only other thing i would add is make a note of what lead goes where.

I wouldn't bother wth the magnecore leads, don't know of anyone who has had super results with them........perhaps you could try looking or asking in a new thread?

Nick.

I have magnacore. Fantastic quality plugs. LPG love them. OEM are crap. Had 2 pairs and the plug ends are rubbish as this is where they fail. Pull them off for a service and its bust. The magnacore have been on 2 years , 2 sets of plugs and heads off 2 times and still great. I think island 4x4 do a cheaper version but I cannot vouch for these. Take the plenun off as you will only spend 2 hours taking skin off the back of your hands, plus the coils may need changing, plus you could damage your new leads as the leads need to go in at angles to allow all the plugs to go on.

No ussues removing the plenum with the LPG installed? Did you leave it in situ or take it off first?

On mine I undid the 8 pipes from the 2 x 4 way manifolds that feed into the LPG injectors. I put tape round them and wrote a number on with a sharpie so I knew which was which when it was time to put back together! The manifolds are bolted onto the plenum with the same bolts that bolt the plenum to the head, so they came off anyway.

Also had to remove the heater pipes that go to the regulator as one mine these run behind the plenum.

Hi.....i have been checking through the various bits and ancilleries that are packed into box's from my engine before the engine comes back next week and noticed that the leads were failing (they were on the car when i got it) so i emithered island 4x4 and ordered some parts and some of those leads you mentioned (the cheaper than Magnecore leads).......my thought being as the engine will be a fresh install it will be interesting to see how they wear.

First impressions are that they seem to be really well made.........so we'ell see how they go.

Nick

Cheers Nick, will you let me know what you think. Took the lamda sensors out today and cleaned the tips and harness plugs. When I fired it up and plugged my HawkEye in both banks were trimming nicely and no cylinders were misfiring. Hopefully a sooty sensor was confusing the ECU into overfuelling and I wont now have to do the leads.:)
