Don't worry about destroying them. If you do any off roading then leaving them off will allow you to jet wash up into the inner wings properly and stop/reduce the likeihood of rusty in that area.
Certainly when I weld up inner wings on a Disco I never put them back, just plenty of paint and cavity wax.

that does mean, of course, that all the **** sits on top of the top hat section on the inner wing

I use an underbody lance to clean around inner wings, wheel archs and door sills
