Petrol in diesel

i ahve heard that people used to put a bit of petrol in diesel, thought it was an lod wives tale, obviously not;), i would have thought changing the fuel filter once the petrol is out would be a good idea?;) martyn

No, No - It's not an 'Old Wive's Tale' - it's more of an 'Old Trucker's Tale'.

Without added petrol or paraffin none of the buses in Kosovo would run to schedule in the wintertime.

When the temperature dropped to below -30 degrees C our Scottish Humanitarian Aid trucks were almost alone on the road - no-one else could get their engines started. The bus drivers managed but only after lighting old cardboard boxes under their tanks - not a good idea if you have a plastic tank!

I managed to obtain (at great expense from Austria) some of the proper anti-waxing additive made by Shell to be added to the fuel by the driver. it smelt to me just like paraffin.

The fuel filter wont need to be replaced as any petrol mistakenly added to the diesel by the OP will have gone straight through.

Singvogel.

ahh, iv'e seen the old "light a fire under the tank:eek:" ploy before, also seen fires under the sump to heat up the oil as it was too thick !!! martyn:D

Why ? The petrol being less greasy than the diesel it cleans the filter element, so ...???
Sorry, see now Singvogel already responded on this.:eek:

when i worked on the spanners many years ago, we always changed filters when fuel was contaminated, petrol in diesel, and vise/versa;)

Alright guys here's what has happened!Pulled into garage and put 6 litres of unleaded into my TD4.Quickly realizing my mistake i topped up with diesel and everything seems to be ok . Do i have any need to be concerned..

Yes, you drive a Freelander

:D

Just to let you all know i have now re-fuelled with fresh diesel and diesel additive and the old girl is going like a train, there appears to be no adverse affects at all thankfully.Cheers everyone for you comments.

I assume it would be a good idea to keep filling up to full with diesel so he keeps watering down the ratio of petrol to diesel?

why put water in your fuel, watering down???????????? more mpg
I'm not saying you should put water in the fuel. He put 10% (6L) petrol in his diesel tank (60L approx). Taking an average of the "well mixed" fuel after using up 25% of his tank, he will have lost 1/4 of his petrol and 1/4 of his diesel. If he then tops up with diesel until it's full then taking averages again he'll have 7.5% petrol in his diesel. If he keeps repeating the refill after using 25% then he will be "watering down" the petrol in his diesel. Watering down is a saying, which refers to ratio reducing rather than adding water.

Perhaps it was a joke?

I did think that too but I thought I'd give him the benefit of my suspicion. There's always the chance some fukwit will go and read it and think putting water in is ok to do. There's many a tratterer lurking in the Freelander section... :boink:

diluting the solution (mix petrol, diesel) is the solution ;):p
