So, given the advice and reading the threads on here i have decided to purchase a p38 (and decided to keep a backup car). I want a late (post 1999) diesel (consider petrol if it is mint ). I want air suspension, leather etc. Is there a buyers guide anywhere? How much should i be looking to pay? What should i look out for? Well aware i will need to buy diagnostic kit too, is the nanocom the one to go for? I want it to be my wedding car in june- but can't access isa til April. Are there any p38 specialists? Or should i buy private? So many questions- help!

There are loads of guides on the web. However they will be full of crap about how unreliable they are and that the devil was involved in building them!

What you need to look for is a good service history showing regular oil and diff changes if its an auto then gear box oil drops need to be looked for as well. Ask direct questions about the Air Suspension like has it had any new bags if so when and why.

these trucks are just as reliable as any other if looked after. The problem is they are luxury vehicals that people try and run on a shoe string.

look at it like having a high maintence girlfreind :) shower it with new things and it'll give you a good ride ;)

Put this on the Range Rover section for a better response.
Check everything works, air suspension goes up and down, engine starts hot & cold. Check the carpet is not wet in the drivers footwell, check it will switch between low and hi range. Auto suits the diesel better as it masks the lack of low down torque.
Leave yourself a lump of cash to fix it when it goes wrong, it will almost certainly need new suspension airbags, not expensive and easy to DIY, I can supply the diagnostics and a guide to replacing the airbags.

A 2 metre EAS cable for the P38 allowing you to work outside the car, necessary when calibrating the heights, together with a CD containing the EAS software, EAS PDF, my Airbag Replacement Guide and a copy of RAVE covering P38, Defender and early L322 is £12.50 plus £4.20 P&P total £16.70 if you pay by cheque, or £18.70 if you want to use Paypal.

Remember, a Range Rover is not a car, it's a hobby. Having said that, my DHSE has given little trouble in 5 years, IMO the P38 diesel is the best of all Range Rovers past or present.
