can anyone tell me what the electric in tank fuel pump pressure should be in psi?
reason for asking is that my new p38 dse has a facet electric fuel pump under the bonnet i would assume this was fitted rather than change the intank pump and it seems to work well no starting issues hot or cold but as i will be getting it chipped next month want to make sure it is putting out the correct fuel pressure.
cheers!

Very little pressure from lift pump. Output is measured by flow rate not by pressure. If you remove pipe from filter and put it in a measuring jug. With ignition off, power terminal 5 on pump relay (12) with live from battery, ( the pin that is orientated counter to the other four) for ten seconds you should get 180ml flow in that time.

the pump that is on it gives 5 psi of pressure so is only low pressure anyway just wanted to make sure it wasnt too low, as the chip that is going in it is from a company called ves sport in scotland and at only £120 plus postage is very cheap wanted to make sure everything with the rangie is right so as not to get misleading results when fitted.
spoke to some other companys who reckon the cheaper companys just copy the data from more known brands so i guess mine may be a guinea pig if it is any good or not!
whats the worst that can happen!!!!!!!!!

is this pump relay under the bonnet? and when you say run a live from battery do you mean use the car battery or an external battery?

Pump relay is in the under bonnet fuse box. Relay 12. Live from positive side of car battery to terminal 5 on relay socket. Terminal 5 is the one that is orientated differently to the other three. Place fuel pipe in measuring jug. Power terminal 5 for exactly 10 seconds. In that time you should get a minimum 180 Millilitres of fuel in the calibrated jug.

The lift pump only supplies fuel to the injection pump. The initial internal pump pressure before injection comes from the injection pumps internal high pressure pump controlled by a relief valve.

but if i am not getting fuel out either ends of the filter after sitting up for a week or so, checking the filter and finding some crud i changed it, now i want to fire up the pump, a)to prime the lines again, and b)check if the pump works..
maybe you have other ideas?

If you had crud in the filter and it was black & slimy, you have bacterial growth in the fuel tank which may have blocked the pump pick up.

ok, so i removed the relay, ignition off, put power to the opposed slot where the relay blade goes, and nothing, no noise, nothing, not a drop of fuel.. was this the correct procedure? does this confirm that i had a duff pump?

If done as i explained yes. It would seem your pump is dead.

i thought as much, and got the angle grinder out at 11pm last night, to remove the pump, glad i did as the two unions on the top were rusted like mad, and the pipes were all split and horrible! i just wanted confirmation, that i had done the correct method for test at the start?
