Is it possible to program the gear box to change gear better? Mine is a bit silly going from 3rd to 4th feels like its got a gear between the to gears for a second or to. Weird????

It will be in 4th then around 50 mph torque convertor will lock giving the impression of a change up. Quite normal. On the V8 you can reset the ECU adaptive values if you fit a new box but you can't do that on the diesel version.

If the gearbox is behaving nomally and is serviced regularly - why should it go bang? It might out-last the car.

That's torque convertor lock up/unlock and is normal. There is an ECU replacement available, I think Ashcrofts may do it, that allows the user to change all sorts of settings from oil pressure to change points. Probably a good way of destroying the box if you don't know what you are doing.:D

Mine does a weird thing, as you approach 40mph at medium throttle it feels like it changes up and then back half a gear. If your gentle on the throttle it changes up to forth then a few mph later the torque converter locks up like normal.
It will only do it at medium throttle, if you give it the full beans it feels like its got 5 gears & then the lock up.
Its been the same for the year I've had it, and done 10k miles
Changed gearbox oil & filter when I first got it, it made the changes smoother but behaviour was the same.
I just live with it, back off the gas as it gets to 40mph & its fine

Slightly stick valve in block most likely. You could try some Lucas transmission treatment with your next oil change see if that helps.

Highly recommend Lucas tranny fix, i gave mine a bottle when changing fluid/filter and gearbox just gets smoother & smoother as miles ticks on.

Also recently had all adaptive values reset, changed the behavior but now after 500 miles its same as before - smooth as silk - 114K on the clock

Sure feel the lock up a little like an extra gear, before the lucas fix i must have had at least 8 gears - box all over the place.

Usually only use reset with a new box. It remembers the driving style to some degree. So if the bloke who had it before you was Lewis Hamilton and you are a nun, maybe worthwile doing. Can be done with Nanocom if you know somebody who has one for the 4.6 box.
