My 4.0 2000 is the only P38 I've ever driven so not sure if the gearbox feel is normal.
It's a little slow to change gear.
Let say I'm going down a hill, dropping it form D to 2nd
It's a good couple of seconds between each gear change.

Is this normal?
Sometime it's also not as silky smooth as I would expect, has a bit of a kick when going up a gear under gentle acceleration.

Planning on swapping the oil and filter in the gearbox when it warms up and stops raining every day.
Anything else I should be looking for whilst doing this job?

Thanks

Sounds normal to me. Ideally you need to change the oil a second time after a few hundred miles as only half the oil comes out when you drain it. An oil change may help the hard shift. Wile uou have the sump off, follow Henryb advice and tighten all the valve block bolts, it made a huge difference to mine.
