Oil Types??

Might be a daft question but can anyone confirm what I think I already know.

My friend has a k reg 200TDI

He has been to sureparts to buy oil to change his gearbox, transfer box and diffs.

Sureparts have looked it up in their book and advised he used 75w for all.

I have always thought that you need ATF for the gearbox (LT77 i think) and 80/90 for the transferbox (LT230 i think) and Diffs.

Can anyone please set me straight before he does his oil change?

nowt from what i can gather.
the 90 is its viscosity/flow rate at 100c and the 80 the same cold.

Oils explained from Drivers Technology, whats written on your oil bottle and what does it mean?.

Use GL4 EP80/90 rather than GL5 EPx80/90 or GL5 EP90 in the transfer box. It's got less additives than the GL5 and potentially does less damage to your box. GL5 oils can apparently degrade phosphor bronze components in gearboxes where high shearing pressure/ high temperatures are found.

The above was the advice I got direct from Comma Oils in Gravesend about a year ago, they suggested I spoke to Land Rover GB to find out whether the LT230 has any phosphor bronze components, but LR could neither confirm or refute this as "they don't keep records going back that far" (which amazed me as the TD5 was still a current production model at the time and used an LT230.) All they could say was, to be on the safe side, use a GL4 EP90 or EP80/90 and not a GL5 equivalent.

Swivels and diffs it makes no difference using GL4 or GL5.

well i did my 300 tdi on sunday put EP90 in diffs tranfer box and ATF in gearbox
