non starting freelander

i wonder if anyone can help ?

yesterday, i was driving my freelander and i stopped at the shops everything was normal.

when i went back to start the car nothing happen, no attempt to start.
the pump was pumping and all lights worked so battery was ok.

i left the car at the shops went back a few hours later to tow it away but i turned the key and everything was fine and was fine this morning.

has anyone else has this problem i dont want this to happen in the middle of nowhere,

any ideas, is it a sensor ? or the starter ? any ideas would be helpful.

Did the starter motor turn over the engine?

no nothing happen started did nothing key turned no attempt to start i checked all battery connections and lights and windows all worked fine

Check the solenoid connection (small wire) to see if the contact is tight and clean, if all ok there it could we worn contacts inside the solenoid that makes the starter work intermittently.

Is this an auto/box? If so check the starter inhibitor on the gear selector. It prevents the starter operating except in 'P'.

If it is sticky / dirty / faulty the fail-safe means that you can't start at all.

I gave mine a quick spray of contact cleaner and no more problem with that bit.

Sounds like cam sensor to me. When they fail they don't work when they are warm, when they cool back down they work again. Get it warm, turn the engine off. If it doesn't restart, bung the cam sensor in the fridge for a bit and try it again. If it starts put a new sensor on it.

Wouldn't be a cam sensor if the starter motor is not working

Ooops I thought it said somewhere it was turning but not firing, my bad.

i had the same problem today .
All the lights and windows worked but wouldnt start
Had to bump start it to get home then went to restart and dead again .

Havent got round to checking the wiring to the starter yet but will do after reading the earlier posts.

When i turned the ignition on the starter doesnt even click so do you reckon it could be a dodgy wire or is the starter gone .
If it makes any difference it out of a 2000 1.8 petrol /manual

Despite my clever-clogs "how to" post of mine, the damn thing won't start after a fuel pump and fuel filter change

The pump works, (stops pumping after about one minute with the ignition on) the engine turns over, but no fire?

All was working OK before when I 'tapped' the old pump, now with a new pump - nothing! I'm sure the fuel is self-priming, no?

Any suggestions?

could be a faulty injector, leak off test would show this. the fantasticly clever engine management system inhibits starting if the pressure at all 4 injectors is different. if one leaks pressure off, it will have a lower pressure and prevent starting.

try starting with easy start or bump starting it, if it starts ok then good chance of being an injector.

Have you checked fuel is being delivered to the injectors ?

No click usually indicates a faulty ignition switch or dirty/loose switch wire on solenoid.

The rear pump at the tank is definitely not sending fuel so i need a fuel tank pump also. Fortunately I have a 3-door so it's all easier access.

For those who haven't yet had to check fuel delivery: remove the easy-connect fuel pipe below the bonnet pump which attaches to a multi connector (see 'How to' photo in other thread)- when you turn on the ignition diesel should flow out from there.

The only problem is getting the old pump out as it normally requires a special tool - anyone done a 'Heath Robinson' to get the old one out? My Landy dealer has kindly offered to lend me the tool

I take it you mean the locking ring securing the pump, just tap it round......

Yep, I thought of 'just tapping round' with a bit of wood but with the offer of the correct tool (cool - what service) I can save the possibility of damaging something...

could be the ignition switch my wife had the same problem the way around it is to feed a live wire from the starter up to the battery and then touch on the positive and if this works then you know it is the switch

Tried that and it does come back to a dodgy switch wire
