Please can anyone offer advice.
My disco will only drive with diff lock on ( bad news its an Auto ).
have taken front prop shaft off as we thought the prob was with the front diff.(the replacemant drive shafts and diff have not been put on yet) so I thought if i remvoved the prop shaft then that would be a temp fix. However that did not work I still have to put the diff lock on to engage drive and now insead of 4wd I have 2wd .
Can anyone help. As it doing my head in and want to go play in the Mud

prob a snapped halfshaft. It's been covered too many times on ere. But to recap. All drive goes to wheel with least resistance. unless difflock is on as this divides drive equally between fornt and rear axles.

when you remove the front prop the centre unlocked diff sends all the drive to the front flange .....thats how diffs work.... engageing the diff lock effectively locks both front and rear flanges together so both rotate... giving you drive to the rear axle, you can then drive in rear wheel drive but theres the risk that something broken in the front axle will jam and cause expensive further damage.

Thanks Everyone,
Should be able to check out the back end when the front is getting sorted out. Thanks Again. VjB

yes if you are using it now with the front prop off and diff lock in the rear end is ok. it sounds like your problem is in the front axle from what you have described

Thanks Again, I sound confused because I am very new to this hobby.
I thought once the front prop was off then I would not need use the Diff Lock to maintain Drive.
I will be replacing both drive shafts and the diff in the front, so with a bit of luck it should be ok.
Again thanks

When all is working fine drive is split between both axle and subsequently all wheels, if a wheel on one axle looses traction then drive is concentrated to the axle in question, this is when you would engage diff lock and send equal drive to both axles transering drive to the opposing axle and hopefully carry on driving. if something has given up/ snapped in the front axle then all the drive would be sent that way without diff lock engaged. so by removing the prop all the drive is concentrated that way untill you selected diff lock.
Just be carefull if you are still driving the car because if the diff has gone it could at any time spit the planet gears into grown wheel and pinion and lock the front end up as it is now been driven by the wheels, it could result in you requiring a whole new axle. it could also be a cv joint thats the cause of youre problems , again be carefull as i have had one go that locked that wheel for a moment but more worrying it jamed the steering solid, luckily it was on a green lane so i wasnt doing above 5 mph, i had to spend 2 hrs dismantling the swivells to remove the debris and it caused more damage than necessary. hope this helps.
Just out of interest what happened prior to losing drive and was there any nasty noises etc

Thanks, I think I get it now.
I do not intend to do to much in the truck until it is sorted out over the holidays.
When I lost the drive, there was un-holey noises (crunching, grinding) from the front, then nothing.
I am now haemorrhaging oil from the front diff, I dont want to take the "diff gaurd" off until I replace the Diff and shafts.
One thing after another, all I want to do is go Greenlaning and get stuck in the MUD. I have only just got the truck and never been off the road yet!
Thanks for all the advise it has been taken on board.

Cheers
Vince

Yes you are right I own the ultimate driving machine. It is not a truck and its not a jeep it is: LAND ROVER. with extras and toys.
but it lives upto its reputation.
I wont forget again.

A toyota hilux / L200 could be referred to as a truck as its technically a pick up truck
I suppose a defender pick up could be referred to as the same
A discovery - not a truck
