Hi,

I have just bought a 1989 Classic, 3.5 Efi Auto with LPG.

A few questions I have:

1) When warm / hot the idle speed gradually gets lower and lower until it stalls. Where should it idle?? When cold its fine. It restarts immediatley, and also if you hold the revs at say 1000 rpm, it will hold it for a while and then gradually drop them until it stalls.

2) The auto box seems to change quickley into 2nd gear, no matter where the throttle is held. This makes it extra sluggish off the mark, changing into 2nd at about 1800 rpm?? Is this normal??

3) Theres a "ticking" noise coming from the passenger side of the engine bay. im assuming its an exhaust gasket / pipe blowing because it only does it under acceleration.

4) Power. On either LPG or petrol, it seems underpowered. If I floor it, the revs take an age to build, although it does accelerate and will sit happily at 80 (on my on test road obviously), just takes a while to get there. Is this normal?? (I appreiciate it is a heavy car with the aerodynamics of a fridge).

5) Drivers side window doesnt work, im assuming this would the motor??

All in all, im pleased with it, just need to sort the idle problems before I let the gf loose in it!!

I have ordered some ignition service parts (dizzy cap and rotor arm (Lucas) and some NGK plugs), see if that does anything.

Cheers guys,

Kieran

re:

1 is this on lpg? if so you need to alter the settings in the software and possible the vapouriser needs adjusting. sounds like its rich at tickover and tring to lean itself out. i assume its a closed loop lpg system such as a leonardo.

2 change the atf fluid, should help the gbox.

I solved 2, by moving the mat out of the way so I can actually get full throttle...:D
It now changes from 1st to 2nd at about 4000 rpm....

The stalling does happen on LPG. The tail pipes do look sooty, but i am unsure as to how the softwear is changed??
Im not sure what system is on it???

you'll need to look for a pipe coming from the air intake near the bit that says 3.9 on it, there should be and electronic valve on that. follow both the pipe and the wires and you should find the lpg ecu and the vapouriser!

and i think your a silly fecker over 2!

oi yer bad tempered yorkie, how yer doing mate.:D:D:D

1) Get the emissions checked, could be that the idle mix is too lean.
2) Normal (though it shouldn't be sluggish away from rest) the V8 relies on torque rather than power. If you really want to be a hooligan stand on the kick-down but remember, in LR factory spec, these engines were not designed for high revs.
3) No idea, others on here may well have.
4) Again normal due to level of tune (suited to 4x4) drive-train losses (two gearboxes & perm. 4x4) & vehicle weight. Can't comment on LPG use, never use the stuff.
5) Try working (up/down) the switch rapidly. If no go, change the switch before going for the motor. Front & rear motors have different gearing to give faster/slower speeds. They are 'handed' & some have different connectors, according to model year.

Watch out for these old hands.............they can be a bit sharp wi ye :D

Has the 3.5 got a CTS? (Coolant Temp Sensor) My 3.9 had similar probs when i first got it,running great when cold but chugging when it heated up and cut out.
Turned out to be mainly the CTS, it's only a £8 fix and a doddle to do.

Good idea to replace all the other stuff with GENUINE parts too. .............oh, and get the timing checked.

Good luck.
